COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After a terrific performance this past Wednesday in their exhibition contest, the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team is ready to tip things off for real as the Golden Eagles officially open the 2025-26 campaign on Monday night against the University of the Cumberlands.
The game starts at 6 p.m. at the Hooper Eblen Center. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ with Jill Jelnick and Steve Smith on the call.
The Golden Eagles, who won their 19th Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title and 11th OVC tournament crown, look to close out their tenure in the league with another championship before heading to the Southern Conference next season.
Tech returns six players from last season, including Reghan Grimes – who needs five points to become the 37th 1,000-point scorer in Golden Eagle women's basketball history; Chloe Larry, Reagan Hurst, Angelika Girgenson, Maddy Newman and Amelia Pfeiffer.
The two transfers and four freshmen – Cam Mathews (Tulsa), Amaya Thomas (Trevecca), Lyriq Mastin, Lareesha Cawthorn, Amaya Redd and Sofi Miller – all had impressive showings last week against Tennessee Wesleyan and will make their official debuts on Monday night.
The University of the Cumberlands already has three official games under its belt and comes into Cookeville with a 3-0 record. Monday's contest is an exhibition game for the Patriots and will not count toward their record or statistics.
Cumberlands opened their season with a 114-64 victory over Kentucky Christian, then topped Huntington 79-59 and Milligan 77-64 in the Patriot Classic on Thursday and Friday.
Joy Kendrick leads the way, averaging 20.3 points per game while shooting .610 from the field and .818 at the free-throw line. The Patriots also have double-digit scorers in Zaram Fredricks (11.3 ppg), Jaydyn Carrico (10.7 ppg) and Aden Clark (10.7 ppg). Fredericks also leads the team in rebounding with a 9.3 average. Clark has a team-best 10 assists, with Kendrick and Darcie Anderson each dishing out eight dimes.
Noel Smith has 10 steals, while Fredricks has six blocks.
