Golden Eagles look to avenge loss to SIUE Thursday

They’ll get their chance to avenge one of their losses on Thursday as SIUE comes into the Eblen Center. Tipoff is set for 5:30 PM. COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team enters the final home weekend of the regular season, the Golden Eagles look to make one last push up the Ohio Valley Conference standings.
They'll get their chance to avenge one of their losses on Thursday as SIUE comes into the Eblen Center. Tipoff is set for 5:30 PM. Dylan Vazzano and Frank Harrell will have the call on ESPN+ (subscription required), while Noah McKay will narrate the action on 106.1 The Eagle.
Back in Edwardsville, the Golden Eagles had a tough time getting the ball to fall through the hoop as Tech attempted 63 shots in the contest, but was only able to hit 22 for a 34.9-percent clip, while the Cougars shot 52.1 percent from the field. After a 12-point deficit in the third, Tech battled back and cut it down to a one-point game with 3:05 remaining.
However, the Cougars made one last surge to get back out by seven points with 48 seconds left. Over the next 17 seconds, the Golden Eagles got a Chloe Larry 3-pointer and a Reghan Grimes layup around an SIUE free throw to make it a three-point game with just 31 seconds left.
After a pair of Lauren Miller free throws, Cam Mathews sank a 3-pointer to make it 64-62, but the Cougars added three more charity tosses to end the contest with a 67-62 SIUE victory.
SIUE (12-14, 5-11 OVC) fell four straight games after that victory, dropping contests on the road against the top of the conference as Morehead State, Southern Indiana, Lindenwood and Little Rock. The Cougars then beat Southeast Missouri 69-61 and UT Martin 62-52 to build some momentum heading into Thursday's game.
Miller and Kiyoko Proctor lead SIUE with identical 12.3-point averages, while Syanne Mohamed has a team-best rebound average of 9.2 Miller leads the team is assists with 69, Mohamed in blocks with 23 and Proctor in steals with 39.
As a team, the Cougars are averaging 61.8 points a game and allowing 60.1. They're shooting .394 from the field, .313 from long range, .652 at the free-throw line, while averaging 6.8 3-pointers and 10.4 free throws made per game.
The Golden Eagles, since the loss at Edwardsville, have gone 4-2, defeating Little Rock 72-47 to break the losing skid, then topped Tennessee State 68-49 on the road. Western Illinois escaped The Hoop with a 68-53 victory over Tech, while LaReesha Cawthorn put together a historic game with 27 points and 27 rebounds as she tied the NCAA's freshman single-game record in rebounds. Tech clawed out a 61-58 win at Morehead State, then fell 72-60 on Saturday at Southern Indiana.
As a team, Tech is averaging 66.5 points on offense and 62.8 points on defense, shooting .376 from the floor, .323 from 3-point range and .709 at the stripe. The Golden Eagles are averaging 6.8 3-pointers and 14.2 free throws made per game.
Larry leads the team in scoring average at 13.7 points per game, while Grimes (13.6 ppg) has the most total points at 339, as well as a team-best 70 assists. Cawthorn (9.4 ppg) leads the team in rebounding with a 10.0 per-game average and continues to be one of the nation's leaders in offensive rebounds with 111 on the season. Cawthorn also leads the team in steals (44) and blocks (30).
Reagan Hurst is averaging 11.9 points per game, while Mathews is averaging 8.1.
