COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech women's basketball team turned in one of the most successful seasons in program history this past year — not just on the hardwood, but in the classroom as well.
On Tuesday, the Golden Eagles were recognized for their academic excellence as the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) ranked Tennessee Tech 13th in the nation in its 2024-25 Academic Top 25. The team posted an impressive 3.699 cumulative GPA, standing tall among elite academic programs across the country.
"There is no shortcut to a season like the one we just had — not on the court and certainly not in the classroom," said head coach Kim Rosamond. "This group of women poured themselves into everything they did, chased excellence in every area, and gave Golden Eagle Nation a team they will never forget. They are leaders, high achievers, and will always be remembered as champions in every sense of the word. Being ranked 13th in the nation for team GPA is a tremendous honor and a true reflection of the character, discipline, and commitment of our student-athletes. Our team continues to set the standard for what it means to pursue excellence both in the classroom and on the court."
Rosamond added, "I am so grateful to our student-athletes for their hard work and to our assistant coaches, led by Associate Head Coach Melanie Walls, who oversees academics, along with Dr. Leveda Birdwell, our Associate AD for Academics, and her team, who are all vital to our success in the classroom."
The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes college women's basketball teams across the nation in their respective divisions that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. Honorees must include the GPAs of all student-athletes on the roster for the full season, with a minimum team GPA of 3.0 required to qualify. Now in its 30th year, the WBCA Academic Top 25 honor roll has become a benchmark for academic excellence in women's collegiate basketball.
The 2024-25 season marks just the second time in school history that Tennessee Tech has earned a spot in the rankings—the first coming in the 2021-22 season when the Golden Eagles were ranked 21st.
It was a banner year in the classroom for the Golden Eagles, highlighted by a program-record 3.795 team GPA in Fall 2024, the highest semester mark in team history. During the fall semester, 11 student-athletes earned a 3.0 or higher, nine posted a 3.5 or better, and six achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA.
In Spring 2025, Tech recorded a 3.593 team GPA — the fourth-highest semester on record — with 10 student-athletes at or above a 3.0, eight above a 3.5, and five earning a perfect 4.0.
The academic recognition caps a 2024-25 season filled with remarkable on-court accomplishments. Tennessee Tech finished 26-6, the program's most wins since 1989-90 and the fourth-highest total in school history. The Golden Eagles went 18-2 in conference play, tying the OVC record for most league victories, and put together a 17-game winning streak that spanned from January 10 to March 21 — halted only by national runner-up South Carolina in the NCAA Tournament.
At home, Tech posted a perfect 14-0 record, marking just the second undefeated home season in program history. The team captured both the OVC regular-season and tournament titles for the first time in 25 years and earned its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance.
With six players averaging double-digit scoring, the Golden Eagles also hit a major milestone with their 500th OVC victory, becoming the first team in conference history to reach that mark.
Tennessee Tech has now competed in three OVC championship games in the last four seasons, winning two of the last three tournament titles and advancing to two of the last three NCAA tournaments. The program continues to build on a legacy of success, now boasting 1,058 all-time wins (22nd among Division I programs) and 513 OVC victories, the most in conference history.
