COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Cam Mathews has made a tremendous impact with the Tennessee Tech women's basketball through the Golden Eagles' first 11 games of the season, helping lead Tech to a 9-2 start – the team's best since the 1989-90 season.
Now, Mathews is being honored by the Ohio Valley Conference after an incredible week, claiming both OVC Player of the Week and OVC Newcomer of the Week honors on Tuesday.
The Player of the Week honors the top performance in the past week by any player in the conference, while the Newcomer of the Week recognizes the best performance in the past week by a transfer player in their first season in the league. The awards are nominated and voted on by the conference's athletics communication contacts.
Mathews, previously at Tulsa, had a fantastic week scoring 53 total points and collecting 13 rebounds with three assists and two steals. She shot .567 from the field, hitting 17 of her 30 shots, including 10-for-18 from 3-point range, while also going 9-for-10 at the free-throw line.
Against Southeast Missouri, Mathews finished with a career-best 34 points – the first Tech player since Reghan Grimes against Tennessee State on January 18, 2024, to score 30 points in a game, as well as the most points scored by a Tech player since Yaktavia Hickson posted 37 against Belmont on January 21, 2017.
In that game, Mathews, a Keller, Texas, native, was 10-for-14 from the field in the game, hitting six of nine shots from beyond-the-arc and going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe, while also collecting five rebounds, an assist and a steal in the Golden Eagles' 79-66 victory over the Redhawks.
Against UT Martin, Mathews added 19 points on 7-for-16 shooting with four 3-pointers. She also had a career-high eight rebounds with two assists and a steal as the Golden Eagles defeated the Skyhawks 74-62.
The weekly honors are the fourth and fifth collected by a Tennessee Tech player this season as freshman LaReesha Cawthorn was named the Player and Freshman of the Week on Nov. 18 and the Freshman of the Week on Dec. 9.
The Golden Eagles are idle this week for the Christmas holiday and will return to action on Tuesday, December 30, looking to extend their 26-game home winning streak against Tennessee State.
