MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A slew of close singles battles did not swing Tennessee Tech's way as the Golden Eagles were upended 4-1 by No. 62 Memphis in Friday's afternoon non-conference contest.
Ricard Garavi Yepez claimed Tech's point, thanks to a 6-1, 6-3 solo nod over Luis Carvalho in the No. 5 gathering in the only singles matchup that was decided in straight sets.
The other three completed solo clashes went the Tigers' direction, while Memphis (9-10) also claimed the doubles point en route to the win.
"I've said it before but wow, I could not be prouder of this group than I am today," Golden Eagle head coach Mark Klysner said. "We just took a great ranked team to the limit, and playing short handed the guys stepped up and gave everything they had. Can't say enough about the tenacity and perseverance we showed today and I'm excited for Sunday."
Obrad Markovski took home a 0-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Davids Spaks in the No. 2 meeting in one of the three completed singles battles that went three sets. Lasse Rensing secured a 6-0, 1-6, 7-5 victory over Murilo Burckhardt in the No. 4 gathering, while Sean O'Nuallain notched a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over Christian Capuccini in the No. 6 position.
Oliver Dao's matchup out of the No. 1 position did not finish after splitting the first two sets with Maxime Dubouch. The No. 3 battle pitting Diego Munoz and Sam Reeve also did not finish with each claiming a set as well.
The Golden Eagles (7-7) dropped the doubles point after Memphis tallied tandem victories in both completed get-togethers. Marcos Castro Fabra and Sam Reeve took down Oliver Dao and Linus Rohlin with a 6-4 decision. Lasse Rensing and Keoni Puig McCallan also defeated Murilo Burckhardt and Diego Munoz, behind a 6-2 triumph, to help the Tigers secure the early lead in the match.
Davids Spaks and Christian Capuccini did not finish their meeting with Obrad Markovski and Marko Milosavljevic in the No. 2 spot. The score was 4-4 at the time it was called.
The Golden Eagles will jump back into Horizon League action with the conference home opener on Sunday. The purple and gold will host Tennessee State at noon CT. Admission to Tech Tennis Courts is free of charge.
