COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team captured the Horizon League South Division title as the Golden Eagles secured a 6-1 win over Southern Indiana to claim the crown, Friday afternoon at Tech Tennis Courts.
The Golden Eagles (13-7, 5-0 HL) notched their sixth win in a row and are now 9-1 over their last 10 matches.
Tech took the doubles point in exciting fashion before the purple and gold rattled off five singles victories to stay undefeated in conference action.
"What a day for these guys," TTU head coach Mark Klysner said. "I couldn't be prouder of a group of guys and what a deserving group it is. Clinching the regular season title means a lot, but we've got one more to go and are certainly not done yet. We have bigger goals, but this feels really good. I'm just so happy for the team and look forward to seeing how far we can go."
Doubles play went down to the wire, but after the Tech tandem of Christian Capuccini and Oliver Dao earned a 6-4 win over Jy Hibbert and Kalani Hibbert in the No. 2 position, the 1-1 deadlock was broken and the Golden Eagles officially seized the tandem point.
Alex Alvarez and Davids Spaks were responsible for the other purple and gold point with a 6-2 win over Mathys Bove and Axel Sabourin in No. 1, while Aaron Dawson and Adam Koon picked up the lone doubles point for the Screaming Eagles behind a 6-1 victory against Murilo Burkhardt and Diego Munoz in No. 3.
All five of Tech's singles wins were by straight sets. Oliver Dao and Alex Alvarez helped set the tone at the top as Dao notched a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Axel Sabourin in the No. 1 spot, and Alvarez collected a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Aaron Dawson in the No. 2 meeting.
The Golden Eagles also tallied points in No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. Diego Munoz posted a 6-3, 6-3 nod over Jy Hibbert in the No. 4 gathering, while Murilo Burckhardt claimed a 6-4, 6-2 triumph in the No. 5 clash and Ricard Garavi Yepez powered home a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 6 get-together.
The Screaming Eagles (4-14, 0-5 HL) tabbed their lone point in the tilt after Davids Spaks retired in his battle with Mathys Bove in the No. 3 duel. The first set was knotted at 6-6 at the time of its conclusion.
Friday also served as Senior Day as Tech honored Elyad Oshnavie in a special pre-match ceremony.
The Golden Eagles will look to make it a perfect conference campaign with one match remaining in the regular season. Tech will travel to Nashville to square off with Belmont on Saturday, Apr. 18. First serve in Music City is slated for 2 p.m. CT.
