HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team took care of business in its only match of the weekend as the Golden Eagles bested Alabama A&M, 4-0, Friday afternoon in Huntsville.
With the win, Tech (5-6) is now 5-2 over its last seven affairs.
The Golden Eagles claimed the doubles point with victories in both completed clashes before Tech went on to capture all three finished singles battles en route to the triumph.
"That was a hard-fought win today," TTU head coach Mark Klysner said. "We came out on fire in doubles which certainly gave us a ton of energy leading into the singles matches. All six singles matches were a lot tighter than some of the scores will show so credit to our guys for hanging on in the tough moments and playing the big points a little better than our opponent. Shoutout to Davids [Spaks] on clinching the match. Now we will head to Gulf Shores and train for the week and prepare for next Friday's match."
Davids Spaks match-clinching win saw the 5-foot-11 junior earn a 6-2, 7-6 nod over Tasso Moreira in the No. 3 spot. The victory was one of three in straight sets for the purple and gold.
Alex Alvarez secured a 6-4, 6-2 win against Yin Chih Lan in the No. 2 position, while Ricard Garavi Yepez posted the other Tech solo victory, behind a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Goran Krivokapic in the No. 6 meeting.
The other three singles matchups did not finish. Oliver Dao split the first two sets out of the No. 1 gathering against Arnav Pathange. The Golden Eagle red-shirt sophomore out of Bratislava, Slovakia claimed the opening set, 7-6, before falling 6-2 in the second.
Diego Munoz also split the first two sets in his No. 4 battle with Juwan Bae after Munoz won the first, 6-4, before dropping the second, 6-4. Murilo Burckhardt lost the first set, 7-5, to Eduardo de Benedictis Andreta in the No. 5 get-together, but the Tech junior from Telemaco Borba, Brazil bounced back to secure a 6-4 win in the second set before the matchup was ultimately called.
The Golden Eagles seized both completed doubles get-togethers over the Bulldogs (3-9). Davids Spaks and Alex Alvarez tabbed a 6-1 nod over Goran Krivokapic and Arnav Pathange in the No. 1 position, while Diego Munoz and Murilo Burckhardt notched a 6-2 victory against Tasso Moreira and Eduardo de Benedictis Andreta in the No. 3 affair.
The No. 2 tangle pitting Oliver Dao and Linus Rohlin against Juwan Bae and Yin Chih Lan did not finish with the score knotted at 3-3.
Tech will now set its sights on a Mar. 20 match at Coastal Alabama in the purple and gold's next contest. First serve in Gulf Shores is set for 9 a.m. CT.
