CLARKSVILLE – The Mark Klysner era of Tennessee Tech men's tennis started off strong as the Golden Eagles won seven of nine doubles matches and eight of 10 singles matchups at Austin Peay's Brian Coons Fall Tournament in Clarksville.
"I couldn't be happier with how we played this weekend," Klysner said. "Whenever you have a new coach come into a program, it can take some time to build the culture and atmosphere you want and these guys in such a short time are buying into the system and giving me everything I could ask for as a coach.
"With the short time we've had to practice and prepare, I think winning as many matches as we did was such a great sin of things to come. I couldn't be more excited about the upcoming season and what these guys are capable of achieving!"
Weather wreaked havoc with the schedule as the Golden Eagles were only able to complete doubles play against Austin Peay, but were able to complete a pair of 5-1 victories over Alabama A&M – playing doubles on Friday and singles on Saturday – and against Cumberland.
Against the host Governors, the Golden Eagles won all three doubles contests as Alex Alvarez and Murilo Burckhardt defeated Rohan Loubser and Glen Arnet 6-2, Oliver Dao and Davids Spaks topped Felipe De La Hormaza and Loan Tomovski 7-5 and Ricard Yepez and Elyad Oshnavie defeated Vincent Lu and Lucas Ranciaro 6-3.
In the match against Cumberland, Dao and Alvarez took it to a tiebreaker to defeat Arne Sohmer and Raphael Lee 7-6, while Burckhardt and Spaks dominated in a 6-1 win over Arthur Fernandes and Matheus Guarnieri. The Phoenix's duo of Mohamed Bouhlel and Elisey Kalashnikov claimed a 6-3 win over Yepez and Oshnavie.
In singles play, Alavrez beat Sohmer 6-2 and 6-4; Dao defeated Kalashnikov 6-1 and 6-2; Burckhardt topped Bouhlel 6-1 and 7-5 and Oshnavie beat Guarnieri in a pair of 6-2 decisions. Fernandes picked up the lone Cumberland win with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) finish against Yepez.
Aainst the Bulldogs, Alvarez and Spaks blanked Yin Chih Lan and Juwan Bae 6-0, while Yepez and Oshnavie took down Agustin Marquez and E. Andreta in a 7-6 (3) tiebreaker. Arnay Pathange and Goran Krivokapic beat Dao and Burckhardt 6-2.
Alvarez cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Pathange, Dao defeated Lan 6-4, 6-3, Burckhardt took a 7-6, 6-1 win over Bae and Yepez claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Andreta. Krivokapic topped Oshnavie 6-0, 6-0.
