Golden Eagle tennis sees season come to an end vs. No. 6 Mississippi State

By Thomas Corhern, TTU Athletics Media Relations STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Tennessee Tech men’s tennis team gave it all on Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament, but the No. 6-ranked Mississippi State squad claimed the 4-0 victory over the Golden Eagles at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. Tech sees its season end with a 16-8 record, 6-0 in the Horizon League. The Bulldogs took the doubles point as Benito Sanchez Martinez and Michal Novansky won the point at No. 1, topping Alex Alvarez and Davids Spaks 6-1. At No. 3, Murilo Burckhardt and Diego Munoz gave the MSU pair of Bryan Hernandez Cortes and Petar Jovanovic a fight before falling 6-4. Christian Capuccini and Sean Daryabeigi did not complete their matchup with Mario Martinez Serrano and Niccolo Baroni as the others were clinched, but trailed 5-2. In singles play, it was the No. 3 through 5 pairings that were able to finish before Mississippi State eliminated the Golden Eagles. Tech’s netters started off well against their Bulldog counterparts, but MSU gained the upper hand. At No. 4, Burckhardt fell 6-1 and 6-2 against Raphael Vaksmann, then Cortes topped Ricard Yepez by dual 6-2 scores at No. 5. Serrano ended the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Munoz. In the unfinished pairings, Alvarez against Martinez went 6-4, 2-1, Spaks 6-1 and 5-1 against Baroni, and Linus Rohlin 6-2, 5-2 against Novansky – all in favor of MSU.
