COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – An in-state battle swung ETSU's direction as the Tennessee Tech tennis team suffered its first home loss of the spring with a 4-0 defeat to the Buccaneers, Tuesday afternoon at Tech Tennis Courts.
With the nod, No. 63 ETSU ran its winning streak to 10 consecutive victories. The Golden Eagles (4-6) are now 4-2 in the last six affairs.
"That was a tough match in some tough conditions, but ultimately playing a ranked team like ETSU who has won nine a row proved to be a challenge for us," Tech head coach Mark Klysner said. "We were a little beat-up injury wise, but the guys who played showed tremendous fight and so I'm happy with the way we played."
The Bucs (10-3) started the contest with a win in doubles play before capturing all three completed singles tilts. The ETSU tandem of Oscar Martinez and Martin Vergara topped Oliver Dao and Linus Rohlin, 6-2, in the No. 1 position to go along with a Juan Listo and James Sim 6-1 win over Murilo Burckhardt and Diego Munoz in the No. 3 meeting to seize the doubles point.
The No. 2 matchup did not finish with Christian Capuccini and Davids Spaks leading 4-3 at the time it was called.
Oscar Martinez carried his doubles momentum into a singles play with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Oliver Dao in the No. 1 clash to improve to a perfect 10-0 in solo action this spring. The Buccaneer victory was one of three during singles.
Martin Vergara joined Martinez in the win column with a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Davids Spaks in the No. 2 gathering, while Arenui Luethi tallied a 6-1, 6-1 triumph against Christian Capuccini in the No. 5 bout to help lead the Bucs to the 4-0 nod.
The other three solo get-togethers did not finish. Diego Munoz and Peter Kalocsai each took home a set in the No. 3 battle, while Murilo Burckhardt and Kai Cowcher did not conclude in No. 4, and Linush Rohlin and Carlos Gonzales did not finish in No. 6.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up their season-long, four-match homestand with a Sunday, Mar. 8 doubleheader against two different schools. The purple and gold are set to host Saint Louis at 11 a.m. CT and Cumberland at 3 p.m. Admission to Tech Tennis Courts is free of charge.
