COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Tech University men's basketball coach Mike Sutton remains in critical but stable condition at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk, Va., where he is undergoing treatment for a rare disease that attacks the immune system.
Associate head coach Steve Payne continues to oversee the day-to-day operations of the basketball program in Sutton's absence.
Sutton sent a message to Payne Wednesday night urging the staff
to monitor the players' academic progress as TTU approaches the end
of the semester.
"It's amazing" said Tech Athletic Director Mark Wilson. "Given
what Mike is going through right now, and his main concern is with
his players' well-being. That says a lot about the type of person
that he is, and how much he cares for his student-athletes."
The original diagnosis was Miller Fisher Syndrome, but has been
changed to Guillain Barre Syndrome.
Coach Sutton has also made a specific request to NOT receive
gifts, etc., but that people would instead make contributions to
the Johnny Donnelly Memorial Scholarship Fund at Tennessee Tech.
That fund provides scholarship to help student-athletes finish
their degrees after they've completed their eligibility.
NOTE: Tennessee Tech is requesting that any
cards be sent directly to the TTU Men's Basketball Office (TTU Box
5057, Cookeville, TN 38505) and those will then be delivered to
Karen and Mike.
