COOKEVILLE, Tenn.--Willie Jenkins has been named the OVC Player
of the Week for his performances in Tech's wins over Jacksonville
State and Samford over the weekend. The senior forward from
Memphis averaged over 27 ppg and five rebounds as Tech moved into
sole possession of first place in the OVC at 10-4.
Jenkins was Tech's leader on the weekend, as they avenged two
earlier losses to the Gamecocks and Bulldogs. Against JSU on
Thursday night, he scored his third 30-point game of the season,
scoring 31 points, including going 10-of-14 at the free throw
line.
His biggest point of the night also came at the foul line, as his
free-throw conversion at the 5:59 mark of the second half gave him
1,000 career points. He is the 28th Golden Eagle in the
program's history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
On Saturday, in what was Tech's biggest game of the season up to
that point, Jenkins finished his weekend with 24 points and five
rebounds against Samford. He was a big part of Tech's second
half comeback, scoring 14 points after the half. He also
showed his defensive prowess, setting a new career-high with six
steals.
The honor for Jenkins is also the second time this season Jenkins
has been named the OVC's top player. He won the award back on
Jan. 3 for his performance over the holiday break.
Jenkins will look to lead Tech to a clinching of the OVC title on
Tuesday night, as the Golden Eagles can clinch at least a share of
the league title with a win over Austin Peay. He will also be
honored along with fellow senior Ben Jacobson in a special pre-game
ceremony on Senior Night against the Governors.
