Tennessee Tech senior Willie Jenkins has proven himself to be in a league of his own throughout the 2004-2005 men's basketball season with plenty of excellent performances and exciting play. Now, Jenkins has been listed among some of the best in the collegiate game.
Jenkins is one of 75 players who have been named to the 2004-2005 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) First-Team All-District list, the latest honor to be added to his ever-growing collection.
"We're all proud of Willie," said Mike
Sutton, Golden Eagle head coach. "It's a great individual
accomplishment, but it is also reflective of how our team is
doing.
"Willie is very appreciative of the honor and he understands that
it is quite an accomplishment and he has worked so hard to earn it.
I'm proud to be a part of the association that awarded this honor
because they are responsible for the direction for our game and
they are always trying to make college basketball better."
Willie's addition to the list makes him the fifth Golden Eagle to
be tabbed to the NABC first-team list, the first since John Best in
1993. Jenkins is also the 10th Tech player to make it on the list
since 1960.
Jenkins has been one of the key players in the Golden Eagles'
quest for an OVC championship and has helped lead his team into
their current first-place tie with Samford, Tech's opponent
Saturday night. Jenkins boasts a strong rebounding ability as well
as the knack for creating big plays for the team.
Willie was honored by the Ohio Valley Conference as the preseason Player of the Year and has put up the statistics this season to make him a viable candidate to repeat the honor in the postseason.
The Memphis native has scored 460 points in the 2004-2005
campaign, averaging 19.2 a game, and leads the Golden Eagles in
rebounds, three-pointers made, and free-throws made, and picked up
his 1,000th career point as a Golden Eagle against
Jacksonville State Thursday night. Jenkins has played two seasons
with Tech, following a transfer from UMass.
Jenkins is now eligible to be named to the NABC Division I
All-American team, slated to be announced following the conclusion
of the season.
