COOKEVILLE, Tenn.--For the second week in a row, junior forward Derek Stribling has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week. This award comes after helping Tech to consecutive wins on the road over Southeast Missouri and Eastern Illinois, improving Tech to a perfect 6-0 record in league play and tied for first place.
Stribling showed how lethal he can be against the Panthers on Saturday night. After getting into foul trouble early in the second half which limited him to just five minutes, the Winter Haven, Fla. native erupted for 11 second-half points. He also grabbed all eight of his rebounds in the second 20 minutes of action.
He had perhaps his best game as a Golden Eagle against the Indians on Thursday, scoring a career-high 23 points and grabbing six rebounds. He was also credited with three steals and two assists in the contest. He was 9-of-12 from the floor on the night, including going 2-of-2 from the foul line and hitting all three of his three-point attempts.
For the weekend, Stribling hit 65 percent (13-of-20) from the floor.
Stribling has been Tech's most consistent player in the last six weeks, hitting double figures in eight straight games. Since his performance in the College of Charleston Tournament (Dec. 29-30) for which he gained all-Tournament honors, Stribling has averaged over 17 ppg.
The honor for Stribling is also the fourth straight week for TTU. Stribling has won the Newcomer of the Week two weeks in a row, while Amadi McKenzie won the Freshman of the Week Jan. 10, and Willie Jenkins took the Player of the Week honor on Jan. 3.
Tech continues its schedule Tuesday night with a trip to Austin Peay to face the Governors. Game time is 7:45 p.m. The Golden Eagles will return home on Jan. 29 to face Tennessee State at 7:30 p.m. TTU and TSU will meet on Alumni Night, which will feature and honor past Golden Eagle greats. The night will also be special as Drew Hixon Night will be celebrated, and Drew and his family will be welcomed back to Tech for the first time since he was seriously injured in Tech's game against South Florida on Sept. 11.
