Tech falls in four to SEMO

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Alayna Pierce's comeback was a strong one as the sophomore collected 19 kills – just two short of tying her career high – in her first match back in almost a full month.
She powered the Golden Eagles on Thursday night, but after Tech took the first set, Southeast Missouri then won the next three to take the match 3-1.
The two teams return to action in the Hooper Eblen Center on Friday at 4 p.m. Dylan Vazzano will have the call on ESPN+ (subscription required). Admission to all volleyball matches at the Eblen Center is free to the public.
Pierce led the Golden Eagles with 19 kills, composing a .325 hitting percentage in the match, while also collecting two service aces, seven digs and an assisted block. Bella Powell also collected a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs. Jordan Karlen finished with 48 assists, leaving her 32 assists away from reaching 4,000 in her career.
Lucy Arndt, the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, collected a double-double of her own, collecting a team-best 10 kills and 11 digs.
Errors made things difficult for Tech (5-10, 2-1 OVC) as the Golden Eagles tried to overcome 27 attack errors, 20 service errors and one blocking error.
The first two sets were nearly mirror images of each other. Through 12 ties and five lead changes in each stanza, Tech and SEMO swapped 25-23 victories with both sets standing close to the end but the victor pulling ahead for the two-point margin required at the end.
The third set saw seven ties and three lead changes with the Redhawks claiming a 25-22 win, then SEMO (9-6, 2-1 OVC) never trailed in the fourth set, clinching the victory with a 25-20 score.
