MOREHEAD, Ky. – In a match that featured its fair share of historical significance, the Tennessee Tech soccer team remained unbeaten in OVC play and extended its winning streak to a season-long three straight in a 4-1 victory at Morehead State Thursday afternoon.
The offensive outburst marked the first time in program history the Golden Eagles have scored at least four goals in three consecutive contests following a 6-1 victory over Western Illinois on Sept. 28 and a 4-1 triumph at Lindenwood on Sunday. The 14 goals are also the most over a three-match stretch in program history.
Tech (3-6-6, 3-0-2 OVC) did a bulk of the damage in the second half, finding the back of the net three times after intermission following a Lucia Cuadra goal in the 21st minute gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead at the break. Cuadra's fourth goal of the year was made possible on a Tori Soutuyo cross that gave Soutuyo an assist on the play.
Katie Toney opened the scoring in the second stanza with a goal in the 62nd minute that pushed Tech's edge to 2-0. The McMinnville, Tenn. native capitalized on a Cuadra through ball for her second goal of the season. Cuadra's assist was the first of two on the day after the Barcelona, Spain product aided Tech's third goal in the 72nd minute to cap off a four-point showing for Cuadra.
Morehead State (3-11-0, 1-4-0 OVC) had cut Tech's lead in half behind a Lily Burt goal in the 69th minute, but Reagan Smiley immediately gave the Golden Eagles their two-goal lead right back with her second score of the season.
Natalie Howard, who split the pipes twice on Sunday in the win at Lindenwood, put the finishing touches on Tech's offensive showcase with her club-leading fifth goal of the year in the 82nd minute. The sophomore forward collected a feed from Cheyenne McCloud before blasting one home from the right side of the box to move the Golden Eagle edge to 4-1. McCloud secured her third assist of the season on the pass.
