EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – A second conference clash produced a second conference draw for the Tennessee Tech soccer team Thursday evening at SIUE. Despite holding a significant edge in shots and corners, the Golden Eagles were unable to find the back of the net en route to a scoreless tie in Tech's first road OVC match of the season.
The nil-nil knot marked the sixth draw of the year for the Golden Eagles (0-6-6, 0-0-2 OVC) to match last year's program record for ties in a season.
Tech led the shot discrepancy, 14-6, to tie Sunday's output in the league opener against Little Rock for the second-most attempts this year. TTU's season-best of 15 total tries took place in the non-conference against North Alabama on Sept. 14.
Tech also set a season-high with nine corners, holding a 9-2 edge over the Cougars (1-8-2, 0-1-1 OVC) in that department.
The Golden Eagles attempted nine of their 14 shots after intermission, which included a trio of serious threats that nearly found the back of the net. Katie Toney hit the post in the 63rd minute, while Lucia Cuadra guided a free kick on-point that almost went home in the 77th minute before Abigail Davis sent a top-shelf drive that was poked over the crossbar by SIUE keeper Sarah Bozeman in the 84th minute.
The Bozeman save was one of six stops for the 5-foot-7 junior. Maggie Conrad notched her second clean sheet of the season and 19th in her career thanks to three saves.
The Golden Eagles tightened the clamps defensively in the first half in limiting SIUE to just two shots. Offensively, Tech put together its fair share of threats behind five first-half corners which included a 7th-minute attempt that nearly put the purple and gold on the board. After an initial shot in front of the goal was blocked away, the ricochet trickled out to Anna Baker who nearly split the pipes, but was denied by Bozeman to ultimately stall the Golden Eagle bid.
Cuadra and Allison Lee knotted Alayna Hauser for most shots in the tilt with three apiece.
The Golden Eagles will now wrap up their first two-match week this conference campaign with a Sunday afternoon affair against Western Illinois in Cookeville. Kickoff with the Leathernecks is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT and admission to Tech Soccer Field is free of charge.
