Tech sweeps Wright State, 3-0; falls to Cincinnati in morning match
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Tennessee Tech volleyball team wrapped up
its action at the Lady Bearcat Invitational by sweeping Wright
State and earned a split on the final day after falling to host
Cincinnati 3-1. Tech had six different players with at least three
kills in the afternoon match. Junior Amanda Lindgren led the
offense with 16 kills to go along with three blocks.
The Golden Eagles (1-2) made it look like the scoring was still
going to 30 in sets as it took several extra points in set two
against Wright State, 33-31. Senior Kappy Lang and junior Teresa
Craig will lead Tech next weekend when they travel home to Muncie,
Ind. and the Ball State Lady Cardinal Invitational.
Set one against Wright State went back and forth with Tech building
up an early 6-3 lead after a Raider error. After Wright State cut
the lead back to 9-7 with a kill, the Golden Eagles went on a 5-2
run and concluded with a kill from Craig. Tech never trailed in the
first set and capitalized on key errors from the Raiders to take
the early set lead in the match.
Set two almost looked like it would be a completely different
story. The Golden Eagles once again built a small 7-3 lead after
three straight kills by Lindgren. But Wright State would not go
away going on an 8-4 run of their own and tying the score up at
11-11, midway through the set. An attack error by sophomore Leah
Meffert gave the Raiders a 17-16 lead and the lead between the
teams would not get larger than three the rest of the set.
It would be Wright State that had the first set point at 24-23, but
a kill by Lindgren tied the score up at 24-24. Tech saved a second
set point on the next play and answered back to take the 26-25 set
point lead. With the score knotted up 31-31, a kill from Lindgren
and another costly error by the Raiders gave Tech the 33-31 set two
win and the more important two sets to none lead in the match.
The final set saw the Golden Eagles get down early 3-0, but would
go on a 13-6 run with kills from Lindgren and Meffert along with
six Raider errors. Lang would add one of her three kills from the
setter position to bring her season total to six. The Golden Eagles
built the lead up to 19-11 before finishing the game with a
Lindgren kill.
Lindgren led Tech with 16 kills, one assist, eight digs and three
blocks. Junior Katie Kenline was prominent on the defensive side of
the net with 19 digs in the three set sweep.
In the morning match against Cincinnati, Tech took set two, but the
Lady Bearcats took sets three and four. Meffert had 15 kills while
collecting eight digs and four blocks including two solo
blocks.
The all-tournament team will be announced following the final match
of the tournament on Sunday after the Marshall and Cincinnati
match.
