Golden Eagles come from behind, down Furman, 3-1; fall to host WKU
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - It looked like sophomore Leah Meffert was
back on track as the defending OVC Freshman of the Year, as she
helped lead the Golden Eagle volleyball team to a win over the
Furman Paladins. With Tech falling in the first set, Meffert
tallied 16 kills to lead the come from behind win.
In the final match of the WKU Hilltopper Tournament, the Golden
Eagles (3-7, 0-0 OVC) fell in three tight sets to the host
team.
Against Furman, Tech had three players with at least 13 kills
against only two for the Paladins.
Set one for the Golden Eagles probably was not exactly what the
team wanted. Furman used five Golden Eagle errors early to jump out
to a 12-6 lead. Tech claimed the next two points off of Paladin
errors but the momentum lasted for a short time as Furman turned
the tables and went on a 12-2 run to put them only two points from
claiming the first set. Two more kills by the Paladins saw the
first set slip by Tech.
Set two was a complete turn around for the Golden Eagles as Tech
capitalized on five errors and chalked up three service aces as
Tech claimed the 25-17 set two win to even the match up at one set
a piece.
Closing out the match in four sets, Tech claimed the final two sets
off of stellar plays from junior Teresa Craig who had 14 kills,
three assists and a service ace. Transfer Alysson Sanders also
continued to show her prowess with 13 kills, two assists, two aces
and 10 digs.
Tech closed out the tournament against No. 34 Western Kentucky, the
host team. The five blocks by the Golden Eagles was not enough as
the Lady Hilltoppers claimed second place behind Miami (Ohio).
For her efforts, Craig was named to the All-Tournament team. This
is the first all-tournament honor for Craig.
Tech returns home next weekend where they begin OVC play when they
host Austin Peay on Sept. 19. The next night, the Golden Eagles
host defending OVC champion Tennessee State.
