COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Golden Eagle baseball team hosts a
crucial three-game home finale this weekend against the Southeast
Missouri Redhawks, currently the third-place team in the league
with a 13-8 record. The Golden Eagles (10-14) are in seventh place,
a game behind sixth-place Samford (11-13).
First, the Golden Eagles can clinch a tournament berth with two
wins against Southeast Missouri and three losses by Samford at
Tennessee-Martin and three losses by Murray State to Jacksonville
State and either Moreheaad State or Eastern Illinois win two of
three games in their series this weekend, leaving it where no one
can sweep.
Another scenario is this: Tech sweeps SEMO and Samford loses twice
to Tennessee-Martin and Murray loses twice to JSU.
The final scenario is a Tech sweep and two of the following must
happen: two Samford losses, two Murray State losses or an Austin
Peay sweep over Eastern Kentucky.
To make the Samford series a little more concerning,
Tennessee-Martin currently has the worst record in the OVC with a
7-16 league record. However, the Bulldogs are on the road to
Martin. The Skyhawks own a 5-7 OVC record at home, 16-11 overall at
home, while Samford is 5-4 in the OVC on the road, 11-10
overall.
Regardless of everything else, sweeping SEMO is still going to be
a monumental effort. The Redhawks are 6-5 in the conference on the
road and has a 10-10 overall road record. Tech is 6-6 in the
conference at the Averitt Express Baseball Complex and holds a
17-11 record at home this season.
