Lack of offense spoils strong start by Dobbs, Tech falls to Lipscomb 4-1
Tennessee Tech freshman Jared Dobbs had a sensational outing in his first career start Tuesday afternoon.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --Tennessee Tech freshman Jared
Dobbs had a sensational outing in his first career start
Tuesday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the Golden Eagle offense didn't provide any run
support and eventually Lipscomb University broke through for a 4-1
non-conference victory at Bush Stadium at the Averitt Express
Baseball Complex.
In winning their third straight, Lipscomb improved to 8-4 overall.
Tech slipped to 3-4 overall.
Dobbs allowed a run in the first inning but settled down and held
Lipscomb scoreless through the seventh on just three hits. The
Bisons scored three in the eighth for a 4-0 lead and all Tech could
answer with was a single tally in the eighth.
Dobbs (0-1) finished with 7.1 innings. He allowed five hits and was
charged with all four runs. He didn't walk anybody and struck out
three. Chason Chote worked the final 1.2 innings and gave up
two hits.
Lipscomb starter Paul Piennette (1-1) was up to the challenge,
throwing seven scoreless innings. He allowed five hits, walked two
and struck out four. Matt Bowling threw to a couple hitters in the
eighth and gave up Tech's run, before Charles Williams came in to
work the final two innings and slam the door. Williams walked two
and struck out two and didn't allow a hit.
The Bisons took a quick lead with a run in the top half of the
first. Catcher Caleb Joseph delivered a two-out double and came
around to score on an RBI single by Shane Simpkins for a 1-0
Lipscomb lead.
In the eighth, Brandon Cadavid started the inning with a leadoff
double to left center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ben
Williams. A sharp single to left by Kevin Gavigan brought Cadavid
home with the second run of the game. After Casey Bond was hit by a
pitch, Chote came out of the bullpen in relief for the Golden
Eagles.
Allen Bolden laid down a bunt on the third base line for a base hit
to load the bases, and Joseph poked a line drive single up the
middle, just out of the reach of a a diving Ryan Wardlow at
shortstop. The brought home Bond and Gavigan to make it 4-0.
TTU catcher Steve Soper picked off Joseph when he strayed too far
away from first base for the second out, and Choate got a fly ball
for the final out.
Tech left two runners in scoring position in the seventh. In the
TTU eight, the Golden Eagles scored once but left two more runners
on base.
Bowling took over for Piennette and walked Thomas Nelson to open
the bottom of the eighth. Michael Roeder singled up the middle with
his second hit of the day and Lipscomb brought Charles Williams in
from the bullpen.
He got a pop up for the first out, then following a walk to Stuart
Meinhart to load the bases, Jake New's sacrifice fly plated Nelson
to make it 4-1. A pop foul behind the plate ended the threat, and
the Golden Eagles went scoreless in the ninth despite a leadoff
walk to pinch-hitter Tate
McMillan.
Joseph finished the day going 3-for-4 for Lipscomb with two
RBI.
The Golden Eagles host a four-game series this weekend against
Canisius. The teams play a single game Friday at 3 p.m., a
doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m., and a final game Sunday at noon.
