Tech in the middle of the pack at 15-team Samford tourney
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Tennessee Tech women's golf team is in
the middle of the pack after the first round at the 15-team Samford
Intercollegiate Monday. Tech is in eighth place overall, led by
senior Ashley Spangler who is ninth individually.
Cold weather shortened the tournament from 54 holes to 36 holes, with the final round set for Tuesday.
Spangler carded a 77 Monday to earn a spot in the top 10 among the 80 golfers. Megan Bradford is two shots back with a 79, putting her in a tie for 19th place. Also in coach Brandy Stout's lineup, Madison Denman is tied for 35th place at 81, Diana Carson is tied for 46th place at 82, and Carley Rhyne is tied for 64th place with an 86.
Host Samford shot a 305 Monday to grab a two-shot lead over the field, with Jacksonville State (307) second. South Alabama and Murray State (312) are tied for third place, while Kennesaw State and Birmingham Southern (313) are tied for fifth.
Troy is in seventh place (314), with Tech in eighth place (319), five shots back. Eastern Illinois is in ninth place (320), with Austin Peay and Belmont (324) tied for 10th. The balance of the field includes UAB (333), Evansville (335), Western Kentucky (338) and Montevallo (346).
