Tech women get first win of season, beat UA-Little Rock, 4-3
CROSSVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Diana Woodcock captured a
tough win in a tie-breaker at No. 5 singles, clinching a 4-3
victory for the Tennessee Tech women’s tennis team Saturday
over the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. The match was played
indoors at Fairfield Glade.
Woodcock outlasted UALR’s Nathalia Garay, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) to
win the last match on the court and break a 3-3 tie, giving
first-year Tech coach Dan Silverstein his first career dual match
win with the Golden Eagles.
“Diana really played with a lot of heart,” Silverstein
said. “It came down to her winning her match, and she took it
on her shoulders and just found a way to win.”
Tech’s record is now 1-1, with a match next Sunday afternoon
against Arkansas State, also at Fairfield Glade. UALR is 1-4.
Tech’s doubles teams staked the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 lead
in the match, getting victories at No. 1 (Kelly Holtzhausen and
Katie Barnhill) and No. 3. (Woodcock and Joanna Corkern).
Holtzhausen overcame a tough first set to win her point at No. 2
singles, defeating Marta Gomez-Jordana, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. At No. 3
singles, freshman Tatiana Denezhkina swept to a straight set, 7-5,
6-4 win over Chantel Coolen.
UA-Little Rock made it a close match by winning points at Nos. 1, 4
and 6 singles. At the top spot, Anne Weijenborg topped Katie
Barnhill, 6-3, 6-4, and at No. 4, it was a 6-1, 6-2 win by Rebecca
Van Den Houte over Laura Porras. The No. 6 point went to Fanny
Lopez, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, over Alena Krutkina.
