Golden Eagles sweep through Southeast Missouri, 7-0
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It was their first match in over a
week, but the time off did not matter to the Tennessee Tech
women’s tennis team as they picked up their second Ohio
Valley Conference win when Southeast Missouri came to town.
The match was played at the Tech Indoor Center due to cold and
blistering conditions outside.
“Our women played well today,” said head coach Dan
Silverstein. “Southeast Missouri was coming in off a tough
five matches in five days, but we did not let down.”
Things got started off right when the Golden Eagles picked up the
doubles point by sweeping through all three matches. Sophomores
Kelly Holtzhausen and Katie Barnhill picked up the win at the top
spot over Julie Masotti and Elise Nattier, 8-2. Senior Evgenia
Yartseva and freshman Alena Krutkina picked up the 8-0 win at
number two doubles to clinch the doubles point.
The freshmen duo of Joanna Corkern and Laura Porras then won at
number three doubles, 8-0 while number one singles started.
The reigning OVC Player of the Week, Holtzhausen had a little
trouble but remained undefeated this spring at 8-0 with a 7-6
(7-4), 6-2 win over Masotti.
“Kelly played really well today,” Silverstein said.
“She is just getting better and better as the season goes
on.”
No one else on the roster had any trouble with their opponent as
Tech won six of the remaining 10 sets at 6-0.
Tech (3-5, 2-1 OVC) returns to the courts on January 30 when they
travel to Jacksonville State for a match at 12 p.m. The match was
moved from last Friday due to weather in the eastern Alabama
area.
