NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a big win on Tuesday against future Southern Conference foe East Tennessee State, the Tennessee Tech softball team will venture westward to take on Ohio Valley Conference – and in-state – rival Tennessee State for a three-game series.
The series begins Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 PM, then concluding with a single game on Sunday at 1 PM.
The Tigers enter the weekend with an 0-13 record on the season with three run-rule losses and two extra-inning defeats. However, that doesn't necessarily make these Tigers out of paper.
The Golden Eagles won the last meeting with TSU in the first round of the 2025 OVC Softball Championship, run-ruling the Tigers 10-2 in six innings, powered by a six-run fourth inning, which included a three-run triple for Alina Schlageter and RBI hits for Olivia Evans and Abbee Klinefelter.
The Tigers took two of three regular-season meetings last season in Cookeville, topping the Golden Eagles 3-0 and 7-2, sandwiching a 6-3 victory at Tech Softball Field. Tech dominates the all-time series 75-19, though the last three seasons has TSU with the 5-4 upper hand in the series.
With TSU still looking for its first win of the season, the Tigers are looking to bounce back from a series sweep at Southern Indiana as the Screaming Eagles won 10-4, 6-5 in nine innings and 6-1.
As a team, TSU is hitting .224, collecting 35 RBI and 41 runs scored with 15 extra-base hits – nine doubles, four triples and two home runs. The Tigers have been walked 44 times and struck out 70, while they've been limited on stolen bases with 14 swipes on 18 attempts.
Jasmine Blackburn (.211) leads the team in RBI with 10, while top average producer Jace Jackson (.425) has a team-best 17 hits and eight runs scored. Jackson and Kailyn Jean-Baptiste have TSU's two home runs of the season, while Jackson also has two of the four triples in the lineup.
In the circle, TSU has a 7.38 earned run average with 64 walks and 30 strikeouts with opponents hitting .333. Kristian Holder (0-5, 6.21 ERA) and Tianna Salcido (0-6, 11.24 ERA) have seen the most work at 23 2/3 innings each, combining for 40 walks and 17 strikeouts. Chelsi Ervin has the team's best ERA at 4.20 over 10 innings in three appearances.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a huge win over East Tennessee State as Ashley Capelouto was one RBI shy of tying the single-game record as she drove in six in a 12-0 victory over the Bucs on Tuesday as she hit two home runs.
She took over the team lead in RBI with 13 on the year as well as eight runs scored, while hitting .300. Jailynn Paderez has the team's best batting average with a .353 mark and seven driven in. Olivia Evans (.245) and Julie Martin (.292) lead the team in stolen bases respectively as Evans has eight steals and Martin six.
As a team, Tech is hitting .222 with 46 RBI and 55 runs scored with 32 extra-base hits – 23 doubles, four triples and five home runs.
In the circle, the Golden Eagle staff has a 5.49 ERA with 71 walks and 73 strikeouts with opponents hitting .322. Addison Abell leads the team with a 3.76 ERA, allowing 19 earned runs over 35 1/3 innings. Abell, Emily York (5.25 ERA) and Lainey Fitzgerald (6.19 ERA) have all picked up a victory in the circle, with Fitzgerald leading the team with 29 strikeouts.
