BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Tennessee Tech beach volleyball team finished off the first day of competition at the Blazer Beach Bash on the campus of UAB on Friday, falling in a pair of duels at the UAB Beach Volleyball Courts.
Southeastern Louisiana (9-15) defeated the Golden Eagles (3-12) 5-0 in the first match-up of the day for the purple and gold, claiming all five points in straight sets. In the No. 3 position, sophomore MK Roberts and senior Aleeya Jones nearly forced a third set in an intense battle in the second, eventually falling 21-18.
Squaring off with host UAB (16-10) in the second tilt of the day, the Cookeville crew found itself on the wrong end of another 5-0 score. The Blazers also picked up five straight-set victories, but not without some close calls along the way.
At the No. 2 slot, the pairing of senior Brooke Amann and freshman Alayna Pierce nearly claimed a first-set win for the Golden Eagles, falling in a 21-19 battle. Representing the purple and gold at the No. 3 position again, Roberts and Jones fought tooth and nail in both sets, but the UAB tandem of Klea Sirois and Lauren Cairo tallied back-to-back wins of 21-19 for the win.
Tech will get back after it on Saturday with two more tilts to conclude the Blazer Beach Bash, starting with a 2:00 p.m. CT match-up against Missouri State. The purple and gold will conclude the weekend at 5:30 p.m., taking on Ohio Valley Conference and in-state rival Chattanooga in a non-conference affair.
