Golden Eagles continue run in the OVC; down defending champs SEMO, 3-0
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - While earning a sweep on a conference
opponent is always a good thing, its better when you do it twice.
The Tennessee Tech volleyball team did just that by picking up a
3-0 win over the visiting Redhawks of Southeast Missouri inside
Eblen Center. It comes after picking up the sweep over EIU on
Friday.
As a team, Tech had a season high 12 blocks and four players with
at last 13 digs. Sophomore Leah Meffert once again led the attack
with the team and match high 11 kills.
"We played as a team this afternoon," said Head Coach John Blair.
"We hit our attacks and we got up on the ball and hit our
blocks."
Tech jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first set and never
looked back.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a eight point lead mid-way through
the set twice at 15-7 and 16-8. But it was when four different Tech
players each recorded a kill that sealed a 5-0 run to end the set
with Tech winning the first set 25-13.
Cutting it a little close, the Golden Eagles almost let the second
set slip away allowing the Redhawks to tie the set up at 18-18. But
the two rotation errors by the Redhawks might have cost them the
set as Tech got the set win 25-21.
After the needed 10 minute intermission between sets two and three,
the Redhawks looked like they did in the first set.
While taking the first point off a Tech attacking error, the Golden
Eagles went on a 13-1 run and kept SEMO at bay the rest of the set.
With points going back-and-forth, Tech held on for a 13 point
spread at the end claiming the match clinching set win, 25-12.
Senior Kappy Lang and Meffert both collected double-doubles. Lang
served up 27 assists while tying the match high digs with 15.
Meffert had 11 kills and 13 digs.
Senior Caitlin Bullock played well on both the offensive and
defensive side of the net with nine kills and four blocks.
SEMO was led by Aubrey Dondlinger with four kills while hitting.
.273. Three Redhawk players had double-digit digs with libero Molly
Davis (11), Claire Keaton (10) and Alyssa Aston (10).
Tech (7-8, 4-1 OVC) returns to the road when they visit Eastern
Kentucky and Morehead State next Friday and Saturday. Match times
are at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
