Golden Eagles tame Panthers, move one step closer to OVC title
CHARLESTON, Ill. - When the Tennessee Tech volleyball team
headed to Charleston, it knew what needed to be done. Get a win.
And that is what they did. Junior Amanda Lindgren led the offensive
attack for the Golden Eagles with 11 kills and four digs.
The win moves Tech one match closer to the OVC championship with
one weekend of play left in the regular season.
The first set almost looked like it was going to be close until
late when the Golden Eagles broke up a one point lead 18-17 and
went on a 7-2 run to claim the opening frame, 25-19.
"We got a good idea how they were going to run things from when we
played them before," said head coach John Blair. "We hit to where
we needed to."
With the Panthers already behind one set, the Golden Eagles did not
want to let up and let EIU even the match up. However, it would be
harder than expected for Tech.
EIU jumped out to a short lead and held on to force the Golden
Eagles to call a time out at 16-18 in favor of the Panthers. Well,
the strategy must have worked since Tech used timely blocks and a
service ace thrown in to go on a 9-2 run and claim the second frame
heading into the intermission.
Tech jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the third set and never allowed
the Panthers to come back.
Sophomore Leah Meffert used 3 of her 10 kills in the final frame to
claim the match with the 25-21 set win.
On the defensive side of the net, the Golden Eagles were led by
senior Caitlin Bullock who tallied five blocks, including two solo
stops. She also hit for seven kills on the afternoon.
Tech (16-10, 13-3 OVC) will return to the road next weekend for the
final two matches of the season against UT Martin and Murray State.
Matches are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m.
respectively.
