COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The state of Tennessee has a long-standing reputation for producing exceptional women's basketball talent through its storied high school programs, and Tennessee Tech women's basketball has greatly benefited from this talent over the years.
That tradition continues as head coach Kim Rosamond and her staff announced on Wednesday the signing of 5-7 combo guard Lyriq Mastin from Blackman High School in Murfreesboro.
Known for her exceptional athleticism, sharp basketball IQ, and dynamic playmaking ability, Mastin brings a blend of skill, competitiveness, and talent that promises to be a valuable addition to Tennessee Tech's program.
Mastin's decision to commit to Tennessee Tech is the culmination of a high school career filled with remarkable achievements, which has helped establish her as one of the premier high school basketball talents in the region. Playing for Blackman High School under head coach Jennifer Grandstaff, Mastin has been a cornerstone for the Lady Blaze, leading them to three consecutive district championships in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Known for her ability as a playmaker on both ends of the court, Mastin also played a significant role in guiding the Lady Blaze to the state tournament in 2022 and 2023.
In her sophomore season, Mastin's versatility and skill were already evident, as she averaged 10 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. Mastin elevated her game to new heights during her junior campaign as she averaged 15 points per game, along with 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Beyond her success in high school competition, Mastin has further honed her skills on the travel basketball circuit with Team Brandan Wright, where she faced top-tier talent from across the nation.
Joining a program with a rich tradition and an established presence in the OVC, Mastin is expected to make a big impact for Tennessee Tech.
"One of my favorite things about Lyriq is the fierce competitor she is on the court," Rosamond said. "She loves big moments and understands what a championship locker room looks like. She has done nothing but elevate her game since her freshman year. Her ability to create off the dribble, get to the rim and create offense off her defense allows her to be an impact player on both ends of the floor. Lyriq's ability to see the floor, make quick decisions, and deliver in pressure situations sets her game apart, and I have no doubts Golden Eagle fans will love watching her in purple and gold."
Mastin herself shared her enthusiasm about her decision to join Tennessee Tech, expressing gratitude for the welcoming environment she experienced during her visit.
"I chose Tennessee Tech because it truly felt like home," Mastin said. "From the coaching staff to the players, everyone was so supportive and encouraging. I'm excited for the opportunity to grow both as a player and as a person while contributing to the team's success. I can't wait to start this journey and to bring everything I have to Tennessee Tech."
Mastin is the second Tennessee Tech signee on Wednesday along with Amaya Redd from Knoxville Catholic with more to be announced in the next couple of days to build a strong class of Golden Eagle signees who will help shape the future of the Tennessee Tech program as well as helping the team continue to compete for championships.
The Golden Eagles will try to start the 2024-25 season with a 4-0 record for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign on Thursday as they host Jackson State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., following the conclusion of the Golden Eagles' Ohio Valley Conference volleyball match against Southern Indiana.
