COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Aiming to return to the throne in the
Ohio Valley Conference after wearing the crown in 2012 and 2013,
the Tennessee Tech tennis team gets its 19-match 2015 season
underway at the end of January.
Coach Kenny Doyle’s team will host six matches during the
year, including five in conference action, all leading up to the
OVC Championships, slated for April 17-19.
The opener is an indoor affair against Lipscomb at the Richland
Country Club, where Tech opened last year with a touch, 4-3 victory
over the Bisons.
Tech faces Middle Tennessee the next day, and goes on to play
non-conference matches against Chattanooga, UNC Asheville, Xavier,
Georgia Tech, and Winthrop on the road before getting the league
schedule underway. In addition to those foes, Tech will also meet
the winner of a match between Kennesaw State and Liberty, and host
South Dakota State before facing its first league bout.
The match with South Dakota State is Tech’s first home
match, scheduled for Saturday, March 7, on the newly resurfaced
Tech campus courts.
The final non-conference match is a visit to Louisville in late
March.
The nine-match OVC schedule opens on the road at Eastern Kentucky
and Morehead State, March 13-14. Tech then hosts five consecutive
league foes, with visits from Jacksonville State (March 19),
Belmont and Tennessee State (March 27-28), and Eastern Illinois and
SIUE (April 3-4).
The regular season closes with conference matches at Murray State
and Austin Peay (April 10-11), one week before the league
tournament. The winner of the conference tournament receives the
league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
There is no admission charge for spectators to watch Tech’s
home matches. The first two home matches have 11 a.m. start times,
and the final four are all scheduled for first serves at 12
p.m.
