Awesome Eagle repeats as National Champion mascot

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Tennessee Tech mascot Awesome Eagle has captured his second consecutive National Championship, winning the title Friday evening at Disney World, while his counterpart, Grandpappy Eagle (photo below), finished fifth in the competition.

The nation learned about Tennessee Tech University’s awesome mascot a year ago, when Awesome Eagle took the top spot in the open mascot division of the Universal Cheerleaders Association national competition.

Awesome Eagle went through a minute-and-a-half routine, which was selected as the winner by the judges. With the win, Awesome edged runnerup YoUDee, the mascot of the University of Delaware, for the second straight year. The wins for Tech in 2014 and 2015 came after the Delaware mascot had won the top spot four years in a row.

The open mascot division is for all Division I universities whose football teams compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), while the IA Division is for Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Schools submit two-minute videos that demonstrate how the mascot interacts with its campus community. Those videos are scored and the top five teams in FCS and top 10 in FBS are invited to Disney to do a live routine. The video scores account for half of the final score.

While Tech won the Open Division, the winner in the IA Division was The Ohio State University.

This is the fourth time Awesome has competed in Orlando.

The competition was broadcast live on ESPN3 and the winning routines will be broadcast on ESPN some time in April.

The mascot team will be recognized for its achievement at an upcoming Golden Eagle basketball game in Eblen Center.
