Golden Eagles 14th at Mason Rudolph; Kitts climbs to 16th place finish
Greg Kitts fired a one-under 70 Sunday to lead Tech and climb to 16th place on the individual leaderboard while the Tennessee Tech men's golf team wrapped up play in 14th place at the Mason Rudolph Men's Championship at The Legends Golf Course
FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Junior Greg Kitts turned in the team's best
performance of the day Sunday as the Tennessee Tech men's golf team
wrapped up play in 14th place at the 54-hole Mason Rudolph Men's
Championships, hosted by Vanderbilt University at The Legends Golf
Course. It was the first outing of the season for coach Polk
Brown's Golden Eagles, who featured three freshmen in the
lineup.
Junior Greg Kitts enjoyed Sunday play the most for the Golden
Eagles, scoring a one-under par 70 to make a move up the
leaderboard for a 16th place finish. Kitts had a very clean round,
scoring one bogey and two birdies, and hitting par on all the other
15 holes. Kitts proved extremely consistent over the three-day
event, carding two-over 73 on both Friday and Saturday.
After opening play Friday with a double bogey on his first hole of
the day, Kitts played the next 53 holes with eight birdies and nine
bogeys, and posted par on the other 36 holes.
Freshman Mitch Thomas was Tech's second-highest finisher, placing
in a tie for 59th. After leading the team following a one-under 70
on Friday, Thomas scored a 76 and Saturday and slipped to an 80 on
Sunday.
Senior Lee Maxwell and freshman Lee Whitehead finished up tied for
70th, each wrapping up at 229. Maxwell closed with a 78 on Sunday
while Whitehead's final round netted a 76. Freshman Adam Cunningham
tied for 75th place with a 231, closing with a 79 on Sunday.
After surging into the lead Saturday, the host Vanderbilt
Commodores (847) held on Sunday to win the team title by seven
shots over Oklahoma (854). Mississippi (858) placed third, followed
by Mississippi State (861), Georgia Southern (864). South Alabama
(865), Georgia State (871), Charleston (873), Davidson (881),
Middle Tennessee (882), East Tennessee (883), Virginia (885), Rice
(888), Tech (892) and Arkansas State (896).
The Golden Eagles will play in the Rees Jones Invitational, hosted
by South Carolina at the Haig Point Golf Course, on Oct. 1-2.
