MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Former Tennessee Tech golf All-American Scott
Stallings came within a few holes of another PGA Tour victory,
finishing tied with Phil Mickelson for second place, two shots
behind Harris Engish, in the FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC
Southwind.
English birdied two of his final three holes Sunday to capture his
first career tour victory.
"Harris played great coming down the stretch,” Stallings
said. A double bogey on No. 15 hindered Stallings' chances, and
gave English a chance to catch him on the leaderboard. Stallings
kept up the fight with a birdie on 16, then finished with a bogey
on 18. He had scored four birdies on the front nine to vault into
the lead.
“I gave myself a lot of opportunities,” Stallings
said, taking the positive outlook. His two-under on Sunday gave him
a 10-under for the tournament.
Mickelson finished with a 67, nearly holing out his approach on
the 18th hole. He made birdie to share second with Stallings.
Stallings will play in his first U.S. Open next weekend near
Philadelphia.
