Volleyball standout Kappy Lang Morin to be inducted into Tech Sports Hall of Fame Friday
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- A member of the Tennessee Tech volleyball team from 2005-08, Katherine “Kappy” Lang Morin made a spectacular career out of simply doing her job better than anyone else had in program history. Coming as no surprise, the Golden Eagle setter set the program’s career record for assists. The thing is, she accomplished the feat as a junior. In four seasons, she rounded things out with 5,084, more than 1,500 than the next closest member of the list. That total was also good enough (and still is to this day) to rank fifth in Ohio Valley Conference history. She is one of four inductees into the 45th class of the Tennessee Tech Sports Hall of Fame. Along with Morin, Milos Babic (men's basketball, 1987-90), Lee Byrd (track and field, 1965-68) and Robert Taylor (football, 1993-96) will be inducted during the annual Hall of Fame Dinner on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Roaden University Center's Multipurpose Room. Lang accomplished the feat with consistency, posting three of the program's top-four single-season marks for assists, including the top two. Her Tech record of 1,585 also ranks as the fourth-highest in OVC history.
As a sophomore, Lang turned in 1,190 assists to crack the top-five in program history. She followed it up with her incredible, record-breaking junior campaign which eventually led to OVC All-Tournament honors.
As a senior, she tallied 1,274 more on her way to claiming All-OVC First Team honors and leading the Golden Eagles to the regular season OVC crown. She turned things up a notch in the 2008 OVC postseason, earning the top place on the All-Tournament team as MVP and leading Tech to the team's first title since 1997.
In 2008, Lang not only led the OVC in assists per set (10.87), she also won six of the league's 12 OVC Setter of the Week honors in the inaugural season for the award.
Lang always seemed to be on the court, racking up the fourth-most sets played (463) in program history. She posted three of the team's four highest assists totals for a single match of four sets, producing 65 three separate times.
She also became Tech's ninth member (currently 10 total) of the Double Grand Club, an honor designated to those volleyball players who record career totals of at least 1,000 in any two categories including kills, assists and digs. She is the only member to do so with assists.
In the classroom, Lang was just as impressive, earning OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll marks four times and a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of her eight semesters. Her prowess on the court, work in the classroom and dedication to the community made her Tech's 2008-09 recipient of the Woman of the Year honor.
She graduated from Tech in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in accounting.
