News mentions
EVANSVILLE, Tenn. – As the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team walked off the court on Thursday following its 79-71 loss to UT Martin in the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championships quarterfinal, it was a moment of sadness. For several members of the Golden Eagle lineup, it was their final game in uniform as their careers came to a close. For some, there lies an air of uncertainty. For others, it’s a moment to build on as Tech begins its preparation for the 2024-25 campaign tomorrow. While the end of the season came much earlier than any of the Golden Eagle players or coaches wanted, it’s a bittersweet moment.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Tennessee Tech turned its defense into offense and the Golden Eagles drained some clutch 3-pointers to build a third-quarter lead and scrape out a big win over Western Illinois to advance. With the victory, the Golden Eagles (16-14) move into the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championships quarterfinals to take on No. 3-seed UT Martin at 3:30 p.m. Dylan Vazzano will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while the game will also be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required).
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The regular season is in the books. Now it’s the main event. As the top eight teams in the Ohio Valley Conference converge on Evansville for this week’s OVC Basketball Championships in the Ford Center, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team has its work cut out for them as they enter play with the No. 6-seed in the tournament. To reach the championship game on Saturday, the Golden Eagles will have to beat No. 7-seed Western Illinois, No. 3-seed UT Martin and No. 2-seed Little Rock in succession to face the victor from the other half of the bracket, which includes regular-season champion Southern Indiana in what will essentially be a home game for them with their campus a short distance from the Ford Center.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Tennessee Tech had not one, but two tries at a game-tying 3-pointer to send Saturday’s affair into a second overtime session, but neither one slipped through the net, closing out the regular season with a heartbreaking 72-69 overtime loss to Little Rock. With Tennessee State’s win over UT Martin and the Trojans’ victory against the Golden Eagles, Little Rock takes the No. 2 seed in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament next week in Evansville. The Skyhawks claim the No. 3 seed, while Eastern Illinois will have the final bye in the postseason event. Morehead State defeated Lindenwood, securing the No. 5-spot, while the Golden Eagles will enter the field sixth. Western Illinois is seventh, while Southeast Missouri can claim the final spot if the Redhawks defeat regular-season champion Southern Indiana tonight – otherwise, the No. 8-seed will go to Tennessee State.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Saturday is the final day of the regular season for the Ohio Valley Conference with the postseason tournament beginning on Wednesday. As Tennessee Tech enters the final contest of the regular season, the Golden Eagles are trying to secure the last bye in the field. Southern Indiana already has the top seed wrapped up. A UT Martin will give the Skyhawks the No. 2 seed and the other double-bye – however, a UTM loss and a Little Rock win over Tech on Saturday will put the Trojans in the No. 2-spot. If the Golden Eagles win and UT Martin wins, Tech will earn the No. 4-seed, losing the tiebreaker to Eastern Illinois. If Tech wins and UT Martin loses, the Skyhawks will win the No. 2-seed through the tiebreaker with Eastern Illinois and the Golden Eagles. The Panthers will be the No. 3-seed, while Tech will be the No. 4-seed.
MARTIN, Tenn. – The winning streak is over. Now it’s time for Tennessee Tech to build a new one. The Golden Eagles saw their six-game winning streak come to a close as shots just did not fall for them Thursday night, leading to a 67-37 defeat to UT Martin in the Elam Center. Tech (15-13, 10-7 Ohio Valley Conference) now falls into a tie for fourth in the conference standings with one game remaining. With the win Thursday, UT Martin leap-frogs into second place with a game left and a half-game lead on Eastern Illinois, who fell to Western Illinois on Thursday to close out the Panthers’ regular season.
MARTIN, Tenn. – With the final week of the Ohio Valley Conference season this week, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team controls its destiny when it comes to the chase for the double-bye in next week’s tournament in Evansville. Victories as the Golden Eagles head to UT Martin on Thursday and Little Rock will certainly go a long way into wrapping up the later start in the tournament.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois won a nailbiter over Tennessee Tech in Charleston. On Saturday, it was the Golden Eagles’ turn. After the visiting Panthers took a 68-67 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the contest, Peyton Carter pulled down an offensive board and put the ball back in to retake the advantage at 69-68 and 1:46 left. At 1:04, Anna Walker drained a 3-pointer to make it a four-point lead, but EIU’s Charita Lewis halved the lead with a jumper at 54 seconds remaining. Lewis and Ellie Buzzelle fouled the Golden Eagles, the latter putting Reghan Grimes at the line for a pair with 14 seconds left.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Even as SIUE poured in 3-pointer after 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team’s offense continued to click to avoid any Cougar comeback bid, taking the visitors down 86-76 Thursday to win their fifth straight game – all by double-digits. Tech (14-12, 9-6 Ohio Valley Conference) remains in a three-way tie for third as UT Martin and Little Rock also claimed wins on Thursday night. Eastern Illinois, the Golden Eagles’ opponent on Saturday, stands a game up in second place at 10-5. Tipoff from the Eblen Center on Saturday for the Senior Day contest is at 1 p.m.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Four games remain in the regular season and it’s shaping up to be a wild finish in the Ohio Valley Conference. The key for the Tennessee Tech women, however, is to win. With the final two home contests for the Tech women’s basketball team coming up this week, the Golden Eagles will entertain SIUE on Thursday and Eastern Illinois on Saturday, both of those games crucial in keeping Tech in great shape in the OVC standings. Tipoff against SIUE is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Eblen Center. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, Dylan Vazzano and Steve Smith will break down the action on ESPN+ (subscription required), while the game will also be available locally on WCTE.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Without a doubt, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team is starting to heat up at the right time. With a 77-66 victory over Western Illinois, one of the Ohio Valley Conference’s top offensive units and none-too-shabby on defense either, the Golden Eagles pulled together a tremendous team effort to collect their fourth win in a row – the longest current streak in the conference. With the victory, the Golden Eagles technically sit in fifth just by percentage points, having played one more game than the four teams sitting in front of them, but they have the same number of wins – eight – as Morehead State, Eastern Illinois and Little Rock sit deadlocked in a three-way tie for second.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – In Western Illinois’ first season in the Ohio Valley Conference, the Fighting Leathernecks have played with a fierce determination, aiming to claim the league title in their first go-round. However, to do that, WIU will have to go through Cookeville first and a Golden Eagle program that is surging itself as the conference slate is starting to come to a close. Tennessee Tech welcomes in Western Illinois Thursday night at the Eblen Center with the tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Steve Smith will narrate the action on ESPN+ (subscription required).
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State cut the game close, all the way down to a three-point deficit in late in the third quarter. Tennessee Tech, however, caught fire in the fourth quarter and that was all she wrote as the Golden Eagles surged to an 80-64 victory over the Lady Tigers on Tuesday night in the Eblen Center. Tech (12-12, 7-6 Ohio Valley Conference) joins the seven-win club in the standings with Western Illinois, Morehead State, UT Martin and Eastern Illinois – all at 7-5 in the league. The Golden Eagles entertain league newcomer Western Illinois for the first time in program history on Thursday night.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Only six games remain on Tennessee Tech’s schedule with the Ohio Valley Conference championships in Evansville looming. As time is starting to sift out of the hourglass on the season, the Golden Eagles still find themselves in position to strike in the conference race. That makes this four-game homestand – starting Tuesday night against Tennessee State – vital as Tech is still very much in position for a second-place finish in the league and a double-bye in the conference tournament. Tipoff Tuesday night is set for 5:30 p.m. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Steve Smith will break down the action on ESPN+ (subscription required).
ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The way this Ohio Valley Conference season has gone this year, one thing is for sure – never expect the usual result. While Tennessee Tech won both meetings last season against conference newcomer Lindenwood, the Lions are certainly no pushover. There’s always the old transitive property with OVC leader Southern Indiana falling to Tennessee State, then TSU dropping a double-overtime contest against Lindenwood on Thursday night in a heated matchup. Then there’s Lindenwood’s win over UT Martin, a team that’s currently tied for third in the league standings.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – As Tennessee Tech enters the home stretch of the Ohio Valley Conference campaign, it’s starting to be crunch time for the Golden Eagle women. Still standing just two games back of second-place UT Martin and Little Rock and just a game ahead of ninth-place Southeast Missouri and Lindenwood, Tech has a chance to propel itself up the standings. The two teams breathing down their necks, conveniently, are who the Golden Eagles have to contend with this weekend as Tech gets back on the road. The road trip begins Thursday as the Golden Eagles head to Cape Girardeau. Tipoff from the Show Me Center is set for 5:15 p.m. Dylan Vazzano will have the call locally on 106.1 The Eagle, while the game will also be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required).
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After an even first quarter, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team just could not get shots to fall when they needed them the most on Saturday. While the Golden Eagles rallied back in the fourth quarter, Morehead State still escaped the Eblen Center with a 65-53 victory. The Golden Eagles (9-12, 4-6 Ohio Valley Conference) hit the road next week as they head to Southeast Missouri and Lindenwood before coming back home on Feb. 13 against Tennessee State.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team had one of its most complete efforts of the season as the Golden Eagles topped Morehead State on the road in their first meeting of the season back in January. Now the Tech women will look for a repeat performance on Saturday as the Golden Eagles work for positioning in the Ohio Valley Conference race.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Throughout her basketball career, Reagan Hurst has been a competitor on a team full of competitors. Determined to help lead her Tennessee Tech sisters-in-arms to victory, the Baxter product put the team on her back, scoring 19 points in the second half. She wanted the win. While Southern Indiana dashed those hopes for one night, topping the Golden Eagles 81-72 in the Eblen Center, the fight has not diminished one iota. The Screaming Eagles may have won the battle and remain undefeated in Ohio Valley Conference play, but there remains a month to play in the race and a conference tournament to play.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – When Tennessee Tech faced Southern Indiana in Evansville earlier this month, the game came down to the final possession. A heated battle throughout, the expectation is there for the same Thursday as the Golden Eagles welcome the Screaming Eagles into their nest. Tipoff for the game is slated for 5:30 p.m. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Steve Smith will break down the action on ESPN+ (subscription required).
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – After a tough loss on Thursday that came down to literally the final second, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team will forget the past and forge onward toward the next opponent – Saturday’s contest at SIUE. Tipoff from First Community Arena is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday. Roger Ealey will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while the game will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required).
Tennessee Tech sophomore Reghan Grimes earned the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's Women's Basketball Player of the Week nod after scoring a career-best 31 points on an efficient shooting night in the Golden Eagles’ lone action of the week in an 86-81 victory at Tennessee State. The award was released Thursday afternoon. The Nashville native shot 10-for-15 from the floor, including one 3-pointer, while hitting 10 of her 11 tosses at the free-throw line. In addition to her first career double-double, Grimes also collected four assists and had two steals in the conference victory. The 31 points are the most scored by a Tech player this season and she becomes the first Golden Eagle to score that or better since Jordan Brock against UT Martin on Feb. 6, 2021.
CHARLESTON, Ill. – It couldn’t get any closer than it did Thursday night during Tennessee Tech’s battle with Eastern Illinois – and what a battle it was. Every time a team went on a run, the other bounced right back. The Golden Eagles had a 3-point lead with under a minute to go, but Miah Monahan knotted the game up with 27.1 seconds to play with a deep shot. After Tech advanced the ball on a timeout, the Golden Eagles wore down the clock to around five seconds before a drive to the basket resulted in a traveling call.
CHARLESTON, Ill. – After an 18-day stretch with only two games for the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team, the Golden Eagles get back into a little bit of normal routine this week as they hit the road to take on Eastern Illinois on Thursday night before heading to SIUE on Saturday. Tipoff for Thursday’s game from Lantz Arena is scheduled for 5 p.m. Roger Ealey will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while the game will also be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required).
NASHVILLE – Tennessee Tech wasn’t going to make it three straight losses at the Gentry Center. With inspired efforts from Reghan Grimes and Maaliya Owens, the Golden Eagles were able to claim an 86-81 victory over Tennessee State on Thursday night. While the final deficit was five points, the game was in the Golden Eagles’ control for the entire second half as Tech (8-9, 3-3 Ohio Valley Conference) led by as many as 19 points nearly midway through the third quarter ay 63-44. That’s not to say the host Lady Tigers (5-11, 2-4 OVC) didn’t make it interesting – TSU cut the deficit down to three points on a 3-pointer from Sanaa’ St. Andre at 1:15 remaining in the contest, Tech leading 81-78.
NASHVILLE – After a thrilling win Saturday, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team will be back in action on Thursday as they head to the Gentry Center to take on Tennessee State. Tipoff for the game is 5 pm. Roger Ealey will have the game on 106.1 The Eagle, while the contest will also be streamed on ESPN+. As of this writing, Thursday’s games are still on as scheduled, while snow and freezing rain are in the forecast. Schedule updates will be available on TTUsports.com and the team’s social media accounts if any changes are made.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the adage says, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. The Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team proved that as the literal truth on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Eagles rallied from a 13-point deficit late in the second quarter and surged on a 13-2 run of their own in the fourth quarter to take a 76-65 victory over Southeast Missouri in the Hooper Eblen Center. Harley Paynter led the Golden Eagles (7-9, 2-3 Ohio Valley Conference) as she not only broke her career-high in scoring, she tripled it as she scored 21 points, shooting an efficient 6-for-8 from the field, 3-for-5 from 3-point range and 6-for-6 at the free-throw line as the Grayson, Ky., native was a spark plug in the second half.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – With a 1-3 start to Ohio Valley Conference play, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team looks to get that turned around this weekend as the Golden Eagles host Southeast Missouri on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Hooper Eblen Center. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Metz and Steve Smith will broadcast the game on ESPN+ (subscription required). Saturday’s game is also the Tech women’s annual We Back Pat game, honoring late Tennessee women’s basketball legend Pat Summitt in her fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – It was a heated contest for the full 40 minutes, but the sprint to the finish in the final 2:32 of the game saw Southern Indiana claim the 69-66 victory over Tennessee Tech, outscoring the Golden Eagles 10-6 as the game came to a close. Kiera Hill ended the game tying her career-high of 18 points, going 8-for-15 inside the arc. She also ended with a team-high six rebounds. Anna Walker also ended the game in double-figures for Tech as she scored 12 points.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Southern Indiana has proven to be one of the most-improved teams in the Ohio Valley Conference this season and currently sits atop the league standings as the Screaming Eagles have won all three of their league games this season. The improved upstart takes on the tradition of the Golden Eagles on Saturday as the two teams lock up on Saturday evening with the tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m. Roger Ealey will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle with Matthew Will and Payton Buse handling the action on ESPN+ (subscription required).
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Slow starts hampered the Tennessee Tech women in the first two Ohio Valley Conference contests of the season. The third time must have been the charm as the Golden Eagles surged out to big leads early to take a 79-56 victory at Morehead State on Thursday night. Tech (6-8, 1-2 Ohio Valley Conference) continues the road trip on Saturday as it heads to Evansville to take on Southern Indiana.
MOREHEAD, Ky. – After a rocky start to Ohio Valley Conference play against a traditional conference power and a rising newcomer, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team will try to get back into the win column on Thursday as the Golden Eagles head to Morehead State. Tipoff on Thursday is scheduled for 4 p.m. Central time. Roger Ealey will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Jared Stacy and Dean Hardin will broadcast the game on ESPN+ (subscription required). The game is the first leg of a two-game road trip this week as Tech will also head to Evansville to take on Southern Indiana on Saturday evening before coming home next Saturday to take on Southeast Missouri for the Golden Eagles’ only home affair at the Hooper Eblen Center this month.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After a slow start in the first quarter, Tennessee Tech rallied from a 13-point first-quarter deficit and took the lead over the visiting UT Martin Skyhawks as the third quarter came to a close. However, UTM outscored the Golden Eagles 21-11 in the fourth quarter, surging ahead and taking a 67-58 victory Saturday afternoon in the Hooper Eblen Center.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After a close finish against Little Rock, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team will get right back at it on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Eagles welcome in UT Martin. Tipoff for the matinee doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. Roger Ealey will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Frank Harrell will break down the action on ESPN+ (subscription required). In more modern history, the Skyhawks have been one of the top teams in the Ohio Valley Conference and the Golden Eagles had a streak of nearly six years going winless against UT Martin. That has changed in recent years as Tech has won the last four meetings against UTM and five of the last six.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It’s pretty safe to say Little Rock had December 28th circled on their calendars since March. After all, Tennessee Tech closed out the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championships in Evansville with the Golden Eagles cutting down the nets after defeating to top-seeded Trojans in the title game. With a strong defensive effort, Tech defeated the Trojans 54-46 for its first OVC crown and NCAA appearance since the 1999-2000 season after Little Rock won both regular-season meetings in their first season in the OVC. When it came to the 2022-23 campaign, Little Rock won the first two skirmishes. Tennessee Tech won the war.
FLORENCE, Ala. – Kiera Hill scored a career-high 18 points to pace the Tennessee Tech women as the Golden Eagles used two big runs in the second half to rally from a seven-point deficit to take a 78-67 victory on the road at North Alabama. Hill had 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, as well as 4-for-5 from the free-throw line, to break her previous career-high of 16 set in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship. Three other Golden Eagles scored in double-digits as Reghan Grimes had 17 points, Maaliya Owens had 11 and Jennifer Sullivan added 10.
FLORENCE, Ala. – It’s been nearly 40 years since the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team has taken on North Alabama, but the Golden Eagles are on the road down to Florence to take on the Lions. COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Ask any coach, and they will be the first to acknowledge the important role a strong strength and conditioning program plays in any winning program. Coach Matt Hewett, Tennessee Tech's Director of Athletic Performance, took over the reins as the strength coach for women's basketball in the spring of 2018, and his impact was felt immediately. Tech women’s basketball head coach Kim Rosamond and her staff are quick to acknowledge how Hewett’s work with their program has been an integral part of their success over the last five years and a catalyst for the 2022-23 championship season. Hewett’s experience and expertise are vital components to the continued development of an elite athletic program at Tennessee Tech. The Iron Eagle Award was one of the ways Hewett helped encourage healthy competition and pride in the weight room, and it is a prestigious honor within the team culture.
