News mentions
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Cookeville Mayor Laurin Wheaton read out a long list of accomplishments the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team achieved during the 2022-23 season with Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter on Monday afternoon, citing details from a joint proclamation from the city and county. It certainly was an impressive list, culminating in the Golden Eagles’ 10th Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship – its first since the 1999-2000 campaign – as well as the team’s first NCAA tournament victory since 1990.
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Hot on the heels of its 10th Ohio Valley Conference tournament title, the Tennessee Tech women's basketball are taking home another piece of hardware from the conference on Monday as the Golden Eagles were announced as the winners of the Team Sportsmanship Award for women's basketball. It is the third OVC Team Sportsmanship Award for Tennessee Tech in this academic year as football and women's cross country both received honors. This is also the third time the Golden Eagle women's basketball program has won the award with 2017-18 and 2019-20 standing as the previous recipient.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – As the buzzer sounded at Assembly Hall sounding the end of the contest, there were tears. Of course there would be – the tremendous journey the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball went on was an arduous one with a lot to celebrate. The Golden Eagles accomplished a lot – the program’s 10th Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship, its 11th NCAA tournament appearance, its fourth NCAA tournament victory. But with the bonds the team built, the sisterhood they formed, the tears were earnest and deserved.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It had been 23 years since the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team had gone dancing in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament. It had been 33 years since the Golden Eagles had won a game in the tournament. As Thursday night turns into Friday morning, those clocks get reset. Using a well-balanced effort across the lineup, the Tennessee Tech women win their fourth-ever NCAA Tournament game, topping Monmouth 79-69 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Thursday night. By virtue of the victory, the Golden Eagles (23-9) advance into the Field of 64 and will take on No. 1-seed Indiana on Saturday morning.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Tennessee Tech women’s basketball head coach Kim Rosamond’s message to the players at the end of Friday’s practice was a simple one. “You belong here.” After all, the Golden Eagles have never shied away from any competition, playing many of the nation’s top programs over the years. They’ll definitely face their toughest test of the season on Saturday morning as Tech (23-9) takes on regional No. 1-seed Indiana. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:30 am. Eastern/10:30 a.m. Central.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Walking into the cavernous Assembly Hall on Indiana’s campus is a bit daunting. As you look up, rows of seats climb nearly as far as the eyes can peer. Giant red banners celebrating the Hoosiers’ success decorate the walls like tapestries. There’s history there, for sure, but the Tennessee Tech women are interested in one thing – using it as a backdrop for its own new chapter. The Golden Eagles will take on Monmouth on Thursday night – scheduled for 8 p.m. Central and 9 p.m. Bloomington time – in the NCAA First Four matchup. The game will be nationally broadcast on ESPN2 with Brenda VanLengen and Holly Warlick will broadcast the game for ESPN2, while Dylan Vazzano and Frank Harrell will have the radio call on 106.1 The Eagle
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Overwhelming support from the fans, community and the University welcomed Tennessee Tech to Cookeville’s Midtown Social on Sunday night as the Golden Eagle women’s basketball team waited to see who they would be playing in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Tech didn’t have to wait long as the Golden Eagles were one of the earliest matchups announced on the selection show, picked to compete against Monmouth in one of the First Four contests. Game times have not been set as of Sunday night, but the game will be Thursday night at Indiana’s Assembly Hall. The winners will take on the No. 1-seeded Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday in the tournament’s first round.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Tennessee Tech’s season is not over yet – far from it. For the first time in 23 years, the Golden Eagles are heading back to the NCAA Tournament. With a program as tradition-rich as Tennessee Tech is, it’s been a long wait and for Kim Rosamond, her staff and everyone who wears the Purple and Gold, it’s good to be back. The Golden Eagles stunned one of the country’s stingiest defenses and tournament No. 1-seed Little Rock with a 54-46 victory in the Ohio Valley Conference championship game at the Ford Center on Saturday with a slow-and-steady effort that broke down the Trojans’ defensive effort.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Trailing by 10 with just over six minutes remaining in the contest, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team needed a run at just the right time. After getting an 11-point streak in the first quarter, the Golden Eagles knew it was possible. And Tech found it through some incredible play around the lineup as the Golden Eagles went on a 17-2 run to close out the game and take a 66-61 victory over Eastern Illinois on Friday in the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship semifinals at the Ford Center.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Anna Walker came out in force, pacing the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team in its Ohio Valley Conference quarterfinal contest against SIUE on Thursday. She had eight points alone in the first quarter and finished with 16 in the contest to lead all scorers as the Golden Eagles took a 76-62 victory over the Cougars. Tech wins its 20th game of the season and advances to Friday’s semifinal against Eastern Illinois. Tipoff in that contest is slated for 3:30 p.m. Dylan Vazzano and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Connor Onion and Teresa Phillips will have the broadcast on ESPN+ (subscription required). The 20 wins gives Tech that mark for back-to-back seasons, the first time for the Golden Eagles to win back-to-back 20 wins since 2004-05 and 2005-06. It is also the third straight appearance in the tournament semifinals.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – They say the waiting is the hardest part, but the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team is taking advantage of the first-round bye as the Golden Eagles get set to hit the road to the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championships. While play kicks off Wednesday in the postseason event, the Golden Eagles will face the winner of Tennessee State vs. SIUE, who tip off at 3:30 p.m. Tech’s first game of the tournament will be the quarterfinals on Thursday, slated to tip off at 3:30 p.m. from the Ford Center in Evansville.
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – On the eve of the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championships in Evansville, the league announced on Tuesday its end-of-season honors. After the voting was complete, the Tennessee Tech women were awarded two selections as senior guard Maaliya Owens was named to the All-OVC first-team roster, while senior guard Jada Guinn was named to the second-team. The awards were voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information contacts.
CHARLESTON, Ill. – With the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team trailing 57-52 with just over four minutes to play, the Golden Eagles weren’t worried. After all, they had already overcome that deficit already in the contest. Jada Guinn turned it up down the stretch, scoring eight points in the final 10 minutes, including 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, as well as three rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block as she helped guide the Golden Eagles back to a thrilling 66-61 victory over Eastern Illinois on Saturday. With that, next week’s Ohio Valley Conference tournament in Evansville is set. Tech (19-9, 13-5 OVC), as the No. 3-seed, will face the winner of SIUE/Tennessee State on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The winner of that game will face No. 2-seed Eastern Illinois on Friday.
CHARLESTON, Ill. – For the most part, the field for the Ohio Valley Conference tournament in Evansville next week is set. Little Rock is the No. 1 seed, Eastern Illinois No. 2 and Tennessee Tech No. 3, while Southeast Missouri has locked up the No. 5 spot. From there, it’s Morehead State, SIUE, Tennessee State and UT Martin trying to solidify their official spot with one of the first-round byes still in play. One might think that Saturday’s contest between Tennessee Tech and Eastern Illinois would have no stakes, but far from it. Even though the Golden Eagles and the Panthers know exactly when their tournament run starts next week in Evansville, there’s still a little matter of pride on the line on Saturday when the two teams square off for the regular-season finale.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – As Tennessee Tech enters its final week of the regular season, the tournament seeding pretty much set for the Golden Eagles. Tech (17-9, 11-5 Ohio Valley Conference) are pretty much locked into the No. 3-seed in next week’s tournament at Evansville’s Ford Center. The Golden Eagles could tie Eastern Illinois with two victories and two Panther losses – including to Tech on Saturday – but EIU presently holds a tiebreaker over the Golden Eagles with a win over current league leader Little Rock. The next team back from the Golden Eagles – Southeast Missouri – stands in with an 8-8 record, giving Tech a three-game cushion and meaning that no team behind the Golden Eagles can catch them in the standings. That said, only Lindenwood has been eliminated in the race, meaning Tech’s opponent on Thursday – Southern Indiana -- has something to play for.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Time flies by quickly. In such a short amount of time, so many things happen. Highlights, adversity, change – all of that and more. following Tennessee Tech women’s basketball’s game against UT Martin, the five senior members of the Golden Eagle roster – sixth-year senior Jordan Brock, Jada Guinn, D.J. McFarlane, Maaliya Owens and manager Ben Trosper – will be honored as the team holds its Senior Day festivities. This group has led the Golden Eagles to 98 victories across six seasons, guiding Tech to the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship game in 2021-22, a second-place finish in the regular season and two postseason appearances with the WBI in 2019 and the WNIT in 2022.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech’s seniors put on a show Saturday as the Golden Eagles picked up an important victory at the Eblen Center, securing at least the No. 3-seed and a first-round bye in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament in Evansville with a 74-63 victory over UT Martin. Two games remain in the regular season. Little Rock clinched at least a share of the regular-season title with a victory Saturday over Eastern Illinois – and the Golden Eagles (17-9, 11-5 OVC) could technically tie Eastern Illinois with two Tech wins and two EIU losses, but the Panthers would have the tiebreaker by virtue of beating Little Rock, the top-seeded team.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech fans might be forgiven for a slight feeling of déjà vu on Thursday night at the Hooper Eblen Center as the Golden Eagles put together another strong outing against Lindenwood, almost mirroring its previous contest against the Lions back in December. Tech (16-9, 10-5 Ohio Valley Conference) cruised to a 71-39 victory over the Lions, using a 10-0 run in the second quarter to help close the door early. The Golden Eagles also accomplished something they haven’t done in some time – securing double-digit wins in the OVC for the fifth straight season, the first time the team has done that stretch since the 2001-02 campaign.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – When Tennessee Tech faced UT Martin in early January, the Golden Eagle women's basketball team had a slugfest early on with the Skyhawks. The Tech women prevailed 61-49 back on January 7, and now the Golden Eagles will try to make that happen again on Saturday as Tech hosts the Skyhawks on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Roger Ealey will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Frank Harrell will broadcast the game on ESPN+ (subscription required). The game will also be available locally on WCTE and student radio WTTU.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Two weeks remain in the regular season and the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team will close out the home portion of the campaign on Thursday against Lindenwood and Saturday against UT Martin. Tipoff on Thursday is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the broadcast on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Michael Cooper will call the action on ESPN+ (subscription required).
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State scored 56 points in the second half as the Lady Tigers pulled away late to top Tennessee Tech 81-72 at the Gentry Center. The Golden Eagles fall to 15-9 overall, 9-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech certainly remembers the last time it faced Tennessee State at the Gentry Center as Gia Adams knocked down a game-winning desperation heave to win the game for the Lady Tigers in overtime. Now, with the Ohio Valley Conference race down to its final five games of the regular season, the Golden Eagles are taking no chances as they look to take down TSU on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff from the Gentry Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. Roger Ealey will broadcast the game on 106.1 The Eagle, while it will also be carried on ESPN+ (subscription required).
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Southern Indiana jumped out to an early lead, but Tennessee Tech used a 16-0 run to surge ahead in the first quarter and never looked back as the Golden Eagles topped the Screaming Eagles 79-59 on Thursday night. Tech improved to 15-8 on the season and stand at 9-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Golden Eagles continue the campaign on Saturday as they head to Nashville to take on Tennessee State. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the Ohio Valley Conference race draws into the home stretch, Tennessee Tech will see a new face in the Hooper Eblen Center on Thursday night as Southern Indiana plays its first contest against the Golden Eagles. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the broadcast on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Michael Cooper will handle broadcast duties on ESPN+ (subscription required).
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Thursday’s loss at Morehead State bothered the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team. When Saturday came around and Southeast Missouri coming into town, the Golden Eagles were determined to do better. Junior Anna Walker came out in force, nearly collecting a double-double in the first quarter alone, then solid performances from Maaliya Owens, Reghan Grimes, Jada Guinn and the rest of the Tech lineup helped stave off any late comeback bids by the Redhawks on Saturday as the Golden Eagles claimed a 71-65 victory in the Eblen Center in the team’s annual Play4Kay game.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – If the previous meeting with Southeast Missouri is any indication, Saturday’s showdown with the Redhawks could be an exciting one. Tennessee Tech hosts the Redhawk women at 1 p.m. at the Eblen Center. Roger Ealey will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Seth Bruton will handle broadcast duties on ESPN+ (subscription required). Saturday’s game is Tech’s Play4Kay contest as the team encourages fan to wear pink and support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund’s work in cancer research.
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State stayed just far enough ahead of Tennessee Tech in the fourth quarter as the home-standing Eagles scored 12 points at the free-throw line and got 15 points from Sandra Lin in the final 10 minutes as MSU took a 70-68 victory over the Golden Eagles on Thursday night. Tech falls to 13-8, 7-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday as they host Southeast Missouri at 1 p.m. Anna Walker tied Tech’s largest lead of the game with 9:47 remaining in the contest, but a 6-0 run by Morehead (9-13, 5-6 OVC) with two second-chance layups and a pair of Lin free throws put the home squad back up by one with 8:14 remaining.
MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team will try to get some momentum building on Thursday as the Golden Eagles head up to Morehead State for a Thursday night battle. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. Central time. Rob Schabert will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while the game will also be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required). After a tough battle with Little Rock on Saturday, the Golden Eagles look to get back on the winning side of things with under a month to go in the regular season. Tech (13-7, 7-3 Ohio Valley Conference) stands in third as February play begins, three games behind conference leader Eastern Illinois, who is still undefeated in league play at 10-0. Little Rock, whose only loss is to the Panthers, stands at 9-1.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Saturday’s game was everything one could ask for in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup between two of the top three teams. The Tennessee Tech women battled back from a 12-point deficit and it was a battle the rest of the way going down to the wire. Little Rock might have won the day, escaping the Eblen Center with a 66-63 victory, but Tennessee Tech certainly made them earn it. The improvement showed from the first meeting to the next and it makes a potential showdown in Evansville an intriguing one. So 63 points? That’s not just the most any OVC team has scored against the Trojans this season, it’s the fifth-most points scored by any opponents in Little Rock’s 21 games played. The teams that have scored more? Arkansas (93), Oral Roberts (74), Auburn (70) and Alabama (69).
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It hasn’t been a long time since Tennessee Tech last saw Little Rock – just nine days ago, to be exact – but there’s no question the Golden Eagles have had Saturday’s date circled in that short time. After falling 61-45 in the Stephens Center, the Tech women will look at the Trojans’ return game as a chance to move up in the Ohio Valley Conference standings as Little Rock comes to the Eblen Center on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Michael Cooper will broadcast the game on ESPN+ (subscription required). The game will also be carried on student radio 88.5 WTTU.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech got off to a hot start in each of the first three quarters as the Golden Eagles’ defense slowed down the conference’s top offense as Tech topped SIUE 89-62. The Golden Eagles improved to 13-6 on the season, 7-2 in Ohio Valley Conference. Tech returns to action at the Eblen Center on Saturday, tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team nears the midway point of the Ohio Valley Conference schedule, the Golden Eagles will start to see some familiar faces as the OVC race begins to heat up with a month remaining in the regular season. Tech (12-6, 6-2 OVC) will start its second go-round in the OVC on Thursday as SIUE comes into the Hooper Eblen Center. Please note that Thursday’s game is a 3 p.m. start time after the men’s game was selected as a wild-card pick by ESPN to be broadcast nationwide on ESPNews. Roger Ealey and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Dylan Vazzano and Michael Cooper will handle the broadcast on ESPN+ (subscription required).
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Saturday’s contest between the Tennessee Tech and Southeast Missouri women felt like a tournament contest. While the Golden Eagles lead for nearly the entire game, the Redhawks never stayed too far away, even after Tech took a 10-point lead midway through the opening stanza.
