Golden Eagle women battle, fall to No. 10 Louisville in opener
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech defense had 14 steals
and forced No. 10 Louisville into 26 turnovers Saturday night in
the season opener in Eblen Center.
Pretty good numbers for coach Amy Brown's team...but not nearly
enough to overcome the high-powered Cards, who claimed an 82-49
victory over the Golden Eagles.
Angel McCoughtry had 29 points and 13 rebounds, along with six
steals, to pace Louisville (1-0) to the win. Louisville forced 33
Tech turnovers in the contest, and the Cards shot 50 percent from
the field while limiting Tech to 34.7 percent accuracy.
Candyce Bingham had 13 points and six rebounds, while Laura Terry
came off the bench to net 11 points for Louisville.
Freshman Krystal Stirrup led Tech in scoring with 15 points, along
with five rebounds and three steals. Also in double figures, Blair
Bowens scored 13 and made three steals. Point guard Allison Price
had seven points and four assists, while Meagan Lyons had a
team-high four steals.
Down 13-2 in the opening five minutes, Tech fought back to within
seven, 13-6, but the Cards -- a Sweet 16 team last winter -- used a
15-3 run to build their lead to 28-9 with 5:44 to play in the first
half. Tech was able to trim the lead down to 14 by halftime, going
to the break trailing 37-23.
Tech got the margin down to 12 points with 14:14 remaining on
layups by Stirrup and Price, but that was as close as the home team
would be the remainder of the contest. Louisville put together a
12-0 run to make it a 24-point lead with 10:11 to play.
The final 33-point margin was the largest lead of the game for
Louisville.
Tech (0-1) visits Lipscomb Tuesday night in Nashville to open a
doubleheader against the Bisons, with tipoff slated for 6 p.m.
