Tech blanked by BYU in final game at Cathedral City Classic
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Tennessee Tech managed just two
base runners against a pair of dominant Brigham Yong pitchers
Saturday morning and dropped an 8-0, six-inning game to BYU to
close out play at the Cathedral City Classic.
The Golden Eagles got singles by Maddie Schmissrauter in the second
and Katie Betry in the fifth as their only base runners.
Starter Christie Zinanti threw the first 3.1 innings, allowing one
hit and striking out four without a walk. Paige Affleck tossed the
final 2.2 innigs and struck out two without a walk, allowing one
hit.
BYU scored a single run in the first and two in the third to hold a
3-0 lead in what looked to be a close contest. But while
Tech’s offense continued to struggle, the Cougar women added
four runs on four hits in the fifth to make it a 7-0 lead.
The Cougars added one more unearned run in the sixth for the 8-0
lead, and closed things out early with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom
of the frame.
Jessica Purcell singled to drive home Angeline Quiocho for a 1-0
lead in the first inning. In the third, Andrea Ramirez walked and
Purcell doubled, and Caschjen Davis drove them both home with a
two-run single.
BYU delivered back-to-back singles in the fifth to chase
Schmissrauter and bring Hortert to the circle, and Ramirez greeted
her with a two-run single for the big blow of the inning.
The Golden Eagles return home from their visit to the west coast to
play at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga next weekend. Tech faces
Sacred Heart and Missouri State on Friday, then plays Valparaiso on
Saturday before heading into bracket play.
