COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Jacksonville State will be looking to win
its fifth straight Ohio Valley Conference rifle title this weekend
at the 2009 OVC Riffle Championship. The two-day event, which takes
place Feb. 7-8, will be held on the campus of Tennessee Tech
University in Cookeville, Tenn. Along with JSU, teams from Morehead
State, Murray State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin will participate
in the championship.
Jacksonville State will be looking to extend its title streak to
five straight this year, a feat matched only by Murray State, which
won seven consecutive championships from 1994-2000. The Gamecocks
finished second in the small bore last year and first in the air
rifle to capture their fourth conference crown.
This year’s championship has the potential to be very
competitive with all five teams ranking in the top 20 of the
2008-09 Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association Mid-Season poll.
Murray State will look to regain the title after finishing second
in the last three championships. The Racers have finished no worse
than third since the inception of the Conference championship in
1994.
The competition is set to begin on Saturday with the first of
three small bore relays getting underway at 8 a.m. CT. Air rifle
gets started on Sunday, with the first of three relays starting at
8 a.m.
