Behind every great coach is a great staff -- Rosamond and staff reflect on what it means to be a part of TTU women's basketball

DALLAS, Texas to HOUSTON, Texas – As the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team studied their scouting reports during the voyage from Dallas to Houston for Sunday’s second-round matchup in the WNIT against the Houston Cougars, head coach Kim Rosamond and her staff weren’t relaxing on the nearly four-hour trip. They studied film, took notes, created game plans, figured out travel, food and lodging – and that’s just scratching the surface.

Golden Eagles see season come to close in WNIT second round

HOUSTON, Texas – Tennessee Tech wasn’t going down without a fight. After all, throughout the course of the 2021-22 season, the Golden Eagle women had never backed down against tough odds, even against opponents from the upper echelon of the sport. The Golden Eagles had an opportunity. If you look at the final score, it’s misleading. The eight-point margin that Houston held on the final tally was from only its third lead of the game, boosted by a 3:17 scoring drought for Tech and nine unanswered points to take a 63-55 victory over the Golden Eagles in the second round of the WNIT.

Golden Eagles overcome Murray to advance to Saturday OVC final

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Murray State led for the majority of the game. Tennessee Tech led when it mattered. A furious effort in the fourth quarter – outscoring the Racers 24-11 in the final 10 minutes – proved to be the push the Golden Eagles needed to send Murray State to the OVC exit, claiming a 68-62 victory over the Racers on Friday in the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship semifinals. The Golden Eagles, winning their 20th game of the season to give the program its 29th 20-plus-win season in its 52 seasons, will take on Belmont on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. from the Ford Center. Dylan Vazzano and Frank Harrell will have the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while Connor Onion and Helen Williams will broadcast the game on ESPN+ (subscription required).

A class to remember: Head coach Kim Rosamond looks back on the Class of 2022
A class to remember: Head coach Kim Rosamond looks back on the Class of 2022

In sports, we often talk about the power of one: the power of one player to impact a teammate or a team, the power of one coach to transform a player’s life, or even the power of one referee’s whistle to change the momentum of a game. As the head coach who has had a behind-the-scenes view to the last six seasons of Tennessee Tech women’s basketball, I was to take this time to talk about the power of one senior class that helped revive and reinvigorate TTU WBB. Kesha Brady, Jordan Brock, Mackenzie Coleman, Megan Clark, Anna Jones and Grace Pelphrey have all left an undeniable mark on Cookeville, Tennessee Tech and all who love this program.

Golden Eagle women look to send out seniors with win Saturday night vs. UT Martin

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team’s regular-season comes to a close on Saturday, it’s a bittersweet moment. It’s the time to honor one of the most prolific classes in Golden Eagle history, recognizing their exploits, celebrating their victories and extending the gratitude for representing the Purple and Gold. But, at the same time, the road is not yet complete. In addition to Saturday’s regular-season finale against UT Martin – tipping off at 5:30 p.m. from the Eblen Center – the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championships in Evansville, Ind., are next week, and there’s still the opportunity for postseason basketball after that.

The Golden Eagles (14-7, 9-2 Ohio Valley Conference) won their seventh straight game and 12 of their last 14. Tech soared out early, shooting 75 percent from the floor in the first quarter, to take a commanding 28-13 lead through the first 10 minutes. While the host Eagles did make things a little interesting at times, MSU (1-20, 0-11 OVC) was unable to cut the deficit back under single digits, getting as close as 13 in the second half. Tech led by 24 with 2:43 remaining in the contest before the home Eagles made a small run to close out the contest.

In a battle to the finish, the Tennessee Tech women showed just why they belong in Ohio Valley Conference championship contention, handing Belmont its first loss in OVC play in seven games. Anna Jones hit a layup with just seconds left in the contest and Belmont could not get a shot to fall as time expired and the Golden Eagles survived their final visit to the Curb Event Center with a 57-55 victory. CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The saying might seem clichéd, but the best way to describe Thursday’s 75-58 victory over Southeast Missouri is total team effort. Mackenzie Coleman was four points shy of tying her career-high in points as she knocked in 24 on 11-of-15 shooting. In addition to her assault under the rim, Jada Guinn added nine points and four players – the Annas Jones and Walker, Ansley Hall and Kesha Brady – each scored eight.

Murray State tops Tech women in rematch

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It was a tough day for the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team on Saturday as Murray State came into Cookeville on short notice after both the Golden Eagles and Racers’ opponents had to postpone. After Tech came away from Murray State last weekend with a victory, the Racers learned from that contest and found ways to slow down the Golden Eagles as Murray ran away with a 70-45 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Eblen Center. The loss put Tech back down to .500 on the season and in the OVC, 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Tech women fall at TSU on overtime buzzer-beater

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A hard-fought game from buzzer to buzzer, Thursday’s Ohio Valley Conference opener for the Tennessee Tech women came down to a fantastic finish. Unfortunately, the incredible last-ditch shot in overtime to win the game came from a desperation heave from Tennessee State freshman Gia Adams, giving the Tigers a 96-93 victory – their first conference victory since February 20, 2020, against Eastern Kentucky, ending a 23-game skid in league play. The Golden Eagles fall to 5-6 on the season, 0-1 in league play. The opening weekend for the Golden Eagles continues on Saturday as Tech travels to Murray State for a 5 p.m. start on New Year’s Day.

Now Tech (3-5) will look to build momentum with the victory heading into Thursday’s matchup against Western Carolina.

Tennessee, Tennessee Tech women renew rivalry Wednesday
Tennessee, Tennessee Tech women renew rivalry Wednesday

KNOXVILLE – It’s been a long time since the Tennessee Tech women have faced the Tennessee Lady Vols. There is a rich history between the two programs and their 27 previous meetings – of which the Golden Eagles claimed 11 victories. Back in the old Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women days before the NCAA officially adopted women’s basketball, Tennessee-Tennessee Tech was a common matchup, playing 22 times in the 1970s. But since women’s basketball became an NCAA sport in 1982, Tech and the Lady Vols have only played twice, the last time coming thirty years ago in a heated, physical matchup on a cold February night in 1991.

However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, things changed. Last season, the OVC Basketball Media Day was held virtually, using Zoom and connecting the coaches with conference media from the comfort of their desks and computer screens. Since then, all of the league’s media days have followed suit. Tech women's basketball picked second in preseason poll, four named to Preseason All-OVC

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – If the Ohio Valley Conference voters’ crystal balls are correct this year, the Tennessee Tech women’s basketball team could have a very exciting season ahead. That season, Tech had 12 first-place votes and 119 total points. The 2021-22 Golden Eagles surpassed that overall point total, earning 134 total points in the voting, while claiming two of the 20 first-place votes. Belmont claimed 15 first place votes and 159 points total as the preseason ballots placed the Golden Eagles just 15 points behind the Bruins and nine points ahead of Murray State as the Racers claimed three first-place votes and 125 total points.
