Thompson named to FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Fresh off his selection for the Ohio Valley Conference’s Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award, Tennessee Tech junior defensive back Jamaal Thompson took home another honor on Thursday as he was named one of 54 student-athletes nationally to the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association Academic All-Star Team. Football players from every FCS institution are eligible for the award with a minimum requirement of a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and have been a starter or key player. Nominees had to have reached their second year of athletics and academics at the college or university and participated in at least half of the total games played in the season. Thompson, who recently completed his degree in communications in May, posted a 3.96 cumulative GPA in his degree field as he finished the spring semester with a perfect 4.0.

“You might not change the world, but you might spark the brain of the one who does.” The thought may be commonly cited to legendary musician Tupac Shakur, but Tennessee Tech football and men’s basketball player Jamaal Thompson repeated the mantra as he reflected on the events of the past year and pledged to carry on his efforts as his time in Cookeville at Tech continues for the near future, it echoed. Thompson, in just the last 15 months or so, made a tremendous impact on the Tennessee Tech campus, not just within athletics, trying to spread a message of equality and love for one another through as many avenues as he could.

Carlisle wins Robert Hill Johnson Award as Tech football hands out yearly honors

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – In the history of the Robert Hill Johnson Award, Tennessee Tech football’s highest honor, only a third have been defensive players. Fourteen of those have been linebackers – which isn’t a surprise considering the Golden Eagles have had some great ones over the years. From John Tanner in 1970 to Jim Youngblood in the historic 1972 campaign, Dana Winningham in 1973, Mark Shrum in 1977, Jeff Daughtry in 1984 and future astronaut and NCAA Theodore Roosevelt Award winner Barry Wilmore the next year, Mike Thornton in 1988, Fred Edgington in 1989, Marrio Thomas and Maurice Draine in 1992 and 1993, Sammy Sanders in 1997, Chad Evitts in 2000, Daniel Wentzel in 2002 and Tommy Harrison in 2004, there have been incredible ones to win the award. Among these players are Tech Sports Hall of Famers, Golden Eagles who have shaped the program over the years and setting the stage for the team now.

Golden Eagles rally, but SEMO escapes with the win
Golden Eagles rally, but SEMO escapes with the win

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri scored 21 points on its first three drives of the game, taking up only 5:20 of the opening quarter. Tennessee Tech could have thrown in the towel there, but the Golden Eagles surged back, clawing within three points with 3:20 left in the game. However, the home Redhawks were able to take a page out of the Golden Eagles’ playbook and eat up the remaining time on the clock to eke out a 24-21 win over Tech. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-4 on the season with two games remaining in the 2020-21 spring campaign and will have a short week as Tech hosts Tennessee State at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday for the final home game of the season.

Tech looks to knock off Murray State on Sunday

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Dean Hood era at Murray State is off to a strong start. There’s no question about his ability to win in the Ohio Valley Conference – after all, he had plenty of success as the head coach at Eastern Kentucky. Now as the head jockey in the stable, Hood has the Racers storming out of the gate, picking up victories over UT Martin and Southeast Missouri to open the spring football slate. On Sunday, their focus is on Tennessee Tech.

Defenses get the spotlight in loss at Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Defensive players got the spotlight on Sunday as Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State combined for five turnovers in their final Ohio Valley Conference matchup from Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium. The Golden Eagles had five turnovers, the Gamecocks three as both teams were able to convert into 13 points. However, the JSU defense was able to stall the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard as well, taking a 24-10 victory. Tech falls to 1-1 in the spring OVC schedule and will have an open date next Sunday, scheduled for the OVC Basketball Tournament in Evansville, Ind. JSU (4-1, 1-0 OVC) will make up its postponed game at Tennessee State next Sunday.

Golden Eagles rally back to knock off defending OVC champ Austin Peay

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Sunday was certainly worth the wait for the Tennessee Tech football team. It had been nearly 15 months since the last time the Golden Eagles took to the field, and while it took a little time to get the offense going in the 2020-21 season opener against Austin Peay, Tech certainly finished with a flourish. Trailing 14-3 midway through the third quarter, the Golden Eagles rifled off 24 straight points, then held on in a wild finish, knocking off defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Austin Peay 27-21 at Tucker Stadium on Sunday.

Thompson's effort to unite campus leads to October Unsung Leader Award

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – During this tumultuous time, student-athletes at Tennessee Tech and across the country have taken the initiative to have their voices heard. In doing so, many have become inspirations to others in standing up for what they believe in. Jamaal Thompson, a junior defensive back on the Golden Eagle football, certainly fits in the inspirational role, uniting Tennessee Tech student-athletes, coaches, students and faculty in that quest. Through his efforts, Thompson was a nearly unanimous choice for October's Unsung Leader Award.
