Bio
Four years of consistency and hard work helped Kelsey Gray develop into one of the top defensive players the Tennessee Tech volleyball team has ever seen, as the Newark, Ohio native spent the brunt of her career from 2009-12 plastering her name all over the record books.
At the conclusion of her time in Cookeville, Gray ranked second all-time with 353 block assists (still third now) and second with 502 total blocks (third now). She also finished third in solo blocks with 149 rejections, ranking first among all players during the rally-scoring era (2001-present).
Her blocks per set mark of 1.14 ranks third all-time for a career in school history, while her career hitting percentage of .269 ranks as the sixth best (fifth when she finished). Gray established a number of single-match, rally-scoring era records for the program, including five solo blocks in three set, seven in four sets, and six in five sets.
Among the top-five rankings for solo blocks, block assists, and total blocks in a single match, fans can find her name listed no less than 20 times. On the single-season charts, Gray owns the second, third, and fourth-best totals for solo blocks, recording 40 as a senior, 41 as a sophomore, and 42 as a junior.
Her 108 block assists in 2012 marked the second-most in team history (now third) while her 148 total rejections during the same season still holds as the second-best mark. She also delivered the third-highest showing in total blocks during the 2010 campaign. Gray’s 1.51 blocks per set as a senior in 2012 represent the second-highest rate as well.
Highly decorated throughout her career, it all culminated with a monster showing during her senior season in 2012. Gray became just the second Golden Eagle ever to win OVC Defensive Player of the Year honors, collecting a spot on the All-OVC Team and one OVC Defensive Player of the Week nod for good measure.
She was also a member of the 2009 OVC All-Newcomer Team as a freshman and collected her first career OVC Defensive Player of the Week honor as a sophomore in 2010.
Gray earned her bachelor’s degree in human ecology from Tech in 2013. During her career, she was an eight-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and four-time member of the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
