Golden Eagles selected fifth in OVC preseason volleyball poll
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – In what is sure to be another neck and
neck season in the OVC, the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles were
selected to finish fifth in this season preseason poll conducted by
the head coaches and sports information directors of the OVC.
“It’s probably harder to pick 6-10 than 1-5 this
season,” said head coach John Blair. “Last season I
believe Austin Peay was picked near the bottom to start the season
but they led most of the way. Everything is decided on the court at
the end of the day.”
Morehead State topped the list with 153 votes, including 11
first-place votes, while Jacksonville State finished second with
139 votes, including nine first-place votes. JSU won the OVC
Championship last season, while Morehead State finished in
third.
Murray State and Eastern Kentucky finished in third and fourth
place with 133 and 105 votes, respectively while TTU received 99
votes to round off the top-five.
Austin Peay followed Tech closely with 93 votes in sixth
place, while southeast Missouri received 65 votes for seventh
place. Eastern Illinois (41 votes), Tennessee State (39 votes) and
UT Martin (33 votes) rounded off the bottom three.
Senior outside hitter Leah Meffert was named to the 2010
Preseason All-OVC Volleyball Team. Last season Meffert finished
second in the conference in kills with 406 and was named to the
all-OVC First Team.
“Leah is one of the best players in the conference
regardless of how the team finishes,” said Blair.
The Golden Eagles open their 2010 campaign against Albany, at
the Clemson Invitational, August 27.
