Golden Eagles win second match in three days, down Lady Govs, 6-1

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Playing in its third match in three days, the Tennessee Tech women's tennis team picked up the 6-1 win over host Austin Peay. It was the 17th straight win over the Lady Govs dating back to April 5, 1995.

"The ladies played with passion today," said coach Dan Silverstein. "They wanted to win this match and their performance showed exactly how much."

Sophomore Kelly Holtzhausen remains undefeated this spring with a 7-5, 6-0 over Mariana Pagan at number one.

Tech also got straight sets wins at number four, five and six.

Sophomore Katie Barnhill dropped the first set at number three to Yuki Nakamura, 3-6, but rebounded to take the second set 7-5 before winning a match tie-breaker 10-5 to get the tough three-set win.

Doubles was also a strong point for the Golden Eagles. The sweep in doubles was the second for coach Silverstein's team this spring with Barnhill and Holtzhausen picking up the win at the top doubles spot over Pagan and Nakamura, 8-5.

Tech (4-6, 2-2 OVC) returns to the court on Wednesday when they host Southern Illinois at 2 p.m. The Golden Eagles own a 2-1 record over the Salukis after picking up the 4-3 win in Carbondale last season.
