Golden Eagles fall to Arkansas State, 5-2

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. – After downing Arkansas-Little Rock last weekend, the Tennessee Tech women’s tennis team fell to the visiting Red Wolves of Arkansas State5-2. Sophomore Kelly Holtzhausen picked up a win at the top singles spot over Jenny Herring and remains undefeated this season.

“We played hard out there,” said coach Dan Silverstein. “We lost some close matches, but we played until the very end.”

Doubles got off to a rocky start for the Golden Eagles. The Redwolves jumped out to an early lead at both second and third doubles spots and finished it off at 8-2. Holtzhausen and fellow sophomore Katie Barnhill kept their match at the top doubles match close, but fell as well, 8-4 to the duo of Jenny Herring and Emily Laing.

Taking the giving break between singles and doubles, Tech refocused and played stronger.

Arkansas State earned the first singles point at the number two spot with Barnhill falling to Paula Chelminska 6-0, 6-1. Tech then got on the board with the straight sets win at the top spot from Holtzhausen. But the Redwolves pulled back ahead by two with Elne Barnard claiming a tough 6-3, 7-5 win over freshman Laura Porras.

The Redwolves clinched the match with a three-set win over freshman Tatiana Denezhkina, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Diana Woodcock then down her opponent Leydi Zora 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
