Gamecocks get late goal to top Golden Eagles 3-2

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team wrapped upits Ohio Valley Conference regular season Friday night atJacksonville State, as the Golden Eagles fell to the Gamecocks 3-2.

JSU's Amber DeLaney scored the game-winning goal off a penaltykick in the 83rd minute to break a 2-2 tie. It wasDeLaney's seventh goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles fell behind 1-0 in the game's seventh minutewhen Lindsay Boehmler scored off a free kick to put the Gamecocksup 1-0. Tech would even the score later in the first half when JenHoffman scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season off anassist from freshman Andrea Meloff in the 28th minute.But JSU had an answer just before halftime as Eli Arthur scored inthe 45th minute, putting the Gamecocks up 2-1 at thebreak.

Taren Brown scored her first goal of the season for the GoldenEagles in the 71st minute to tie the game with a helperfrom Kris Cambron, but DeLaney's late goal put JSU up for good.

The Gamecocks outshot Tech 12-9, including a 6-4 advantage inshots on goal. Hoffman and Emily Homan had two shots for the GoldenEagles, and Brown, Leigh Heffner, Michelle Decker, Kerri Reid andLindsey Reed all had one.

Tech goalkeeper Kaitlyn Thacker finished with three saves, whileher counterpart Ali Koenig had two.

Tech finishes the OVC season at 3-3-2, and falls to 4-11-3overall. The Golden Eagles will face Lipscomb in a non-conferencematchup on Oct. 27 at Lipscomb before heading to the OVCtournament Nov. 5-8. The OVC tournament will be hosted by theleague's regular season champion, with the top six teams earning abid. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will receive a first-round bye.
