COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech soccer team won its
final regular season game Wednesday, topping Lipscomb 2-0 at Tech
Soccer Field.
Redshirt freshman Lia DiGrappa scored her first goal of the season,
which proved to be the game-winner, off an assist from Kristin
Hennek and Taren Brown in the first half.
Ashley Smith sealed the game for Tech with a late second-half goal,
her team-leading sixth of the year, with help from Katie
Hoover.
"Scoring two goals today was definitely a positive thing for us,"
coach Becky Fletcher said.
Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Thacker made five saves in the shutout
effort, her third shutout of the season. In five all-time meetings
between the two schools, Tech has never given up a goal to
Lipscomb. Tech finishes the 2008 regular season with a 5-13-1
overall record.
The Golden Eagles now look ahead to the opening round of the Ohio
Valley Conference tournament, when they travel to face UT Martin in
the opening round on Nov. 4.
"It's really nice to get a win going into the tournament," Fletcher
said. "It's going to be a fight against Martin. It's your whole
season in one game."
The winner of the opening round game will advance to Murray, Ky.,
for the conference semi-finals, and face Eastern Kentucky. In
regular season OVC play this year, Tech lost to UTM and beat EKU.
