Rhyne paces Golden Eagle women's golf team on first day in EKU tourney
RICHMOND, Ky. -- Carley Rhyne made it around Arlington Golf
Course at two-over par 74 Saturday, putting the Golden Eagle senior
in a tie for fourth place on the individual leaderboard and pacing
the Tennessee Tech women's golf team into a tie for seventh in the
13-team EKU Spring Invitational.
Rain and lightning approaced with two holes remaining on the day's
first round, causing a lengthy delay in play. The teams completed
the first round in the early afternoon, and were on the course in
the middle of the second round when darkness halted play. They
teams will pick up Sunday where they were in the second round, then
hope to have time for a third round in what is supposed to be a
54-hole event.
Murray State, led by co-leader Morgan Cross (7), shot a
first-round 295 total and owns a nine-shot lead over Ohio (304) and
Arkansas State (304). Morhead State (306) is fourth, followed by
Toledo (307) and Southern Illinois (312). The Golden Eagles and
host Eastern Kentucky are tied for seventh after carding 314 in the
first round.
Austin Peay and Bowling Green (316) are tied for ninth, two shots
behind Tech and EKU. A second EKU Colonel squad is in 11th place
(321), with Marshall (323) and Tennessee State (350) rounding out
the standings.
Rhyne, who led the field in par three scoring and was second in the
tourney with three first-round birdies, is four shots off the lead
at 74. Freshman Katy Beth Glover and senior Lindsay Spradlen [photo
at left] (79) are next in line for Tech at 79, tied for 36th place.
Sophomore Katherine Bell is tied for 54th place after shooting 82,
and sophomore Amanda Randolph is tied for 66th place, rounding out
the lineup for coach Brandy Stout with an 86.
In addition to the 65 players in the lineup for the 13 teams in
the race, there are also 14 individuals competing to fill the field
at 79 total golfers. Tech has two players among the individuals.
Freshman Brandy VanEtten is tied for 54th place with an 82, while
freshman Amber Shepherd is tied for 60th with an 84.
The other co-leader is also among those on the inividual roster.
Austin Peay's Ashley Averitt opened with a 70 and is tied for
first, but her score can't help the Lady Govs.
