Carson tied for second, Tech in sixth place at Drake Creek

Final 18 holes set for Tuesday morning at Drake Creek Golf Course

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Of the 116 scores marked on the first day of the Drake Creek Invitational Monday in Paducah, only two came in below par -- one of those by Tennessee Tech's Diana Carson.

The Golden Eagle senior opened the 2009-10 season with a 76 in her first round Monday and came back with a one-under 71 in the second round to lift her into a tie for second place among the 58 golfers in the field.

Tech is in sixth place in the team standings. After shooting a 315 team total in the first round for seventh place, Tech jumped one spot in the standings to sixth with a second-round 312.

Host Murray State leads the tournament with a 36-hole total of 598, with Eastern Kentucky second at 604. Austin Peay (611) is third, Belmont (617) fourth and Western Kentucky (620) fifth. Austin Peay's Catherine Smith shot 72-74 to take the individual lead with a 146, one shot ahead of Carson and Murray State's Andrea Downer. Downer opened with a 70 and followed with a 77 for her 147 total. Only one other golfer, WKU's Emily Wolff, is under 150 with a 148.

Senior Megan Bradford was the next lowest scorer for Tech on Monday, carding rounds of 79 and 77 for a 156, placing her in a tie for 21st place. Carley Rhyne (80-81--161) is tied for 33rd, followed by freshman Amanda Randolph (84-83--167) in 48th place and Katie Brown (80-89--169) in 51st place.
