Golden Eagles women’s basketball inks first recruit for 2011-12 season

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech women’s basketball head coach Sytia Messer has begun to flex her recruiting muscle as she announced her first signee for the 2011-12 season.

A 6-2 forward out of Dillard High School, T’Keyah Williams has signed a national letter of intent to play at Tennessee Tech.

Williams is the first addition to the Golden Eagle roster this year, on the heels of Messer inking a recruiting class that ranked tops in the OVC and the top 100 nationally.

“She will be a great addition to our team and should fit into our program very well with her defensive and skills and rebounding abilities,” Messer said. “She will help us out with our post play inside and will be a great defensive addition.”

A former teammate of current Golden Eagle center Candace Parson, Williams provided a solid presence at the post position not only for Dillard High School, but also as a member of Team Breakdown under head coach Pat Gajardo.

Under coach Marcia Pinder, Williams averaged a career-high 10 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks per game during her junior season as she led Dillard to a class 5A State Championship. She is heading into her senior season at Dillard this winter.

Williams ranked 74th in the nation at her position by ESPN’s Hoopgurlz. Brandon Clay’s Jump Off Plus and Mike T. White’s All Star Girls Report also ranked her nationally among the best.

The daughter of Serena Cook, Williams plans to major in electrical engineering.

The Golden Eagle begin their 2010-11 season Monday, as they host the Alabama A&M Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
